Looking back, the 1998/70th annual Oscars was quite incredible. Most of the movies nominated remain popular to this day. Lets review:
- Titanic took home 11 Oscars, including picture, director and film editing. It only lost in three categories: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Make-up.
- Good Will Hunting won Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Ben Affleck & Matt Damon.
- L.A Confidential took Best Supporting Actress for Kim Basinger and Best Adapted Screenplay for Brian Helgeland & Curtis Hanson.
- As Good As It Gets won Best Actor for Jack Nicholson (his third) and Best Actress for Helen Hunt.
- The ceremony lasted for 3 hours and 47 minutes. 57.25 million people watched the show, according to Nielsen Ratings.
- Billy Crystal hosted the ceremony for the sixth time.
- Other classics up for big awards were The Full Monty, Wag the Dog, Jackie Brown, Boogie Nights, In&Out, Donnie Brasco, Deconstructing Harry, Men in Black, Face/off, Con Air, The Fifth Element, Contact, Starship Troopers, My Best Friend's Wedding and Air Force One.
- 1998 was the last time we saw a film winning best picture without a screenplay nomination. Only seven times in Oscar history that has happened.
- Speaking of Titanic, it tied with Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Ben-Hur for the most Oscars won.
- 3 of the 5 Best Picture nominees grossed over a 100 millions at the box-office. To be exact, they grossed over 138 million dollars.
- As Good As It Gets became the seventh and last film to win both best actor and best actress. It was the first to win both actor and actress without winning a screenplay award.
What stood out for you that season?
