I have no clue who is the Queen and who is Matilda. This is not the first time I've had no idea who he was talking about with the alternate names in the polls. I didn't get Matilda at all. Anyway, I love both of them and they are fantastic acting goddesses in their own way. I prefer Winslet. I haven't even seen her recent stuff. But I'm not a "what have you done lately?" kind of person. I'm going based purely on who has given me the most moving and rewarding experiences onscreen, as I always do. She had me at Marianne Dashwood crying in the rain, I'm sorry.

PromNightCarrie - You have never heard of "Waltzing Matilda", the unofficial anthem of Australia? I'm genuinely shocked at the reaction this is receiving on here...

Nicole Kidman, in their shared era, is a more gifted, versatile and interesting performer than either of them, but even though I've found her to become less interesting and her range to be less persuasive as time has gone by, Cate Blanchett is still someone I put over Kate Winslet (as a screen actor in totality, but also as a theatre actor, something Winslet seems reluctant to really challenge herself with at the highest level in theatre, which is almost unheard of for a British actress at her level. Shit, you got Jodie Comer, who has been on the scene all of 5 minutes, doing one woman stage shows to prove herself on stage, while Winslet has been avoiding the scrutiny of stage most of her career, even while married to Sam Mendes).
To me, it's why someone like Olivia Colman, has rapidly been able to seem like more of a true heir to Judi Dench/Vanessa Redgrave etc than Winslet in the grande tradition of great British actresses, despite Winslet having like a 20 year advantage/headstart over Colman with her Hollywood breakthrough. And though a bit older than Winslet, I also consider Tilda Swinton to be better than her in terms of current British actresses of note.
Winslet is a very fine screen actress, but I honestly don't think there is anything she does, that a British peer like Rachel Weisz can't do just as well (actually, Weisz can do stage better, because she did it successfully at the highest level with things like A Streetcar Named Desire). In general, I also find Winslet's choice in material to be pretty dull, and it feeds my belief that she's not quite as mercurial a talent as the likes of Blanchett, Kidman and Swinton. Too much of it is dreary awardsbait (she's also thirsty for awards to the point where it's a determining & offputting factor in her choices as an actor, moreso than even someone like Blanchett, who clearly loves awards as well)..

I like threads like these. Every once in a while Tyler gets a reminder that most of us aren't as cultured or high class as he is But seriously, a lot of younger Aussies wouldn't have even heard of Waltzing Matilda. Can't really be expecting non-Aussies to know it.

Well damn... Next time let's all take turns hitting me with a 2x4... I'll use strictly their names as they are billed on the movie posters from now on. Jeesh.

Never in my life have I heard that song. Is it really common knowledge? Let me rephrase that, is it common knowledge for an American? The things I have learned about Australia, well, I'll keep to myself. This isn't that kind of thread. If you're not Australian, did you first hear this in that Ava Gardner movie?

PromNightCarrie - No, I'm American and I learned about the song in third grade! - we learned it in music class. I remember I did a presentation on the Sydney Opera House... I think my parents still have it recorded on a VHS somewhere.

Love ‘‘em both but going with Winslet.
Also @tyler, include me in the group that rarely knows who is who from your poll names vs the thread title.

Usually I would have gone for Blanchett as I think she been more consistently great through her career. But Mare of Easttown turned it more even, as I think it's one of the very best performances by anyone in the past 10 or so years (I also loved Winslet in Steve Jobs). I'd probably still slightly lean towards Cate, but it's much closer than what it would have been a few years ago.

Winslet by far... Mare of Easttown, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children, Mildred Pierce impressed me far more than anything Blanchett has done.

Jodie Comer doesn't have a film career. She's a zero in film so far, as Ridley utterly failed her with The Last Duel. What does her stage triumph have to do with Winslet, a 46 year old actress with an Oscar win and 7 nominations and a close friendship with the GOAT screen actor ? Colman is fool's gold, as I've been saying. She's on an Amy Adams run, and will get cold very soon, particularly as she's not physically in the same category as these other women, including Dench at the same age. Swinton is a genius, but way too far from normative in appearance to poach roles from a Winslet/Kidman. Weisz is very good, but struggles with roles demanding extremes. She could never pull off the court scenes in The Reader.

Winslet redeemed herself big time with Mare of Eastown, but it's still Blanchett's for the taking quite easily. She doesn't nail it every single time and her lows are almost as embarrassing as Winslet's, but what arguably matters the most are her highs and they have proven to be well beyond her competitor's reach IMO.

I thought Blanchett was inexplicably really bad in Carol. And not even in a going against type and flopping type way, it's the kind of thing she should hit out of the park and she just didn't. She felt fake the whole time and Mara and the aesthetics had to bail the movie out.

I think this is the only reason she was able to rebound from Kidman beating her so handedly in 2019... Seeing careers ebb and flow can be really fascinating.
