She's the Queen of "Prestige TV" tbh ....... Kate Winslet is set to lead her fourth HBO limited series, with the premium cabler ordering the drama “The Palace.”
Winslet will star in the series, which tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of an authoritarian regime as it begins to unravel.
Winslet will executive produce the series in addition to starring. Will Tracy created the show and will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Stephen Frears is attached to direct and executive produce, with Frank Rich also executive producing. Seth Reiss, Juli Weiner, Jen Spyra, Gary Shteyngart, and Sarah DeLappe will also write for the show.
It was announced in June that Winslet is also attached to star in the HBO limited series “The Trust,” based on the novel of the same name by Hernan Diaz.

If I was Blanchett I'd get my Cuaron film on to the Emmy schedule or else Winslet could easily win a 3rd......although it may be smarter not to go against Winslet at all

So far it's a bit wonky, but Winslet is very good. One of her weirdest characters.

I was looking forward to catching up with this this. Then I saw the critics scores and decided to go with Shogun instead ( which two episodes in, it is excellent).
I thought this was doing well critically, but maybe that was the first wave of reviews skewing things . But it's at 58% on Rotten Tomatoes with 40 reviews and 58 Metacritic with 27 reviews. Which isn't good.
I always say reviews aren't everything from a personal perspective (because critics have been wrong about films or shows before), but from an Awards perspective, unless HBO pull out all the stops with payola, I don't know how this becomes a major awards season player.
Winslet has gotten mostly strong reviews, but Best Actress In A Limited Series tends to correlate very strongly with reviews for the show itself. No show that I can recall in the last decade has gotten a lead Emmy actress nomination with a Rotten RT score. So Winslet might be DOA....perhaps if the Golden Globes are in a starfucking mood, they might give her a nod, but Emmys will be a huge stretch. But so far based on the receptions for their performances and shows released, I'd say the strongest contenders for Emmy nods at the moment are:
Sofia Vergara ( Griselda) Nicole Kidman (Expats) Sarayu Blue ( Expats) Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country ) Juno Temple ( Fargo) Brie Larson ( Lessons In Chemistry) Naomi Watts ( Feud: Capote Vs The Swans) Diane Lane ( Feud: Capote Vs The Swans) Anna Sawai ( Shogun)
Still waiting to see for Julianne Moore with Mary & George, because while the first reviews are good ( like they were for The Regime), there aren't enough of them yet. Also, Starz do not have a great track record with the Emmys, which seems to hate the network ( Outlander hardly gets recognised by them, despite a strong critical and audience following)

she's on track for Emmy #3. Not with a show with 58% on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 on Metacritic she isn't . Statistically, with those reviews for a show, she almost certainly won't be nominated. Not everything needs to win or be nomimated for an Emmy. Winslet should be proud that she's gotten mostly strong reviews in a critically panned/divisive show and come out of it unscathed. That's a good reward in it's own way. I do wonder what is happening to her movie career though. It was kind of shocking that Oscarbait as obvious as Lee, went nowhere (despite so-so reviews) for her last year. I think she's struggling to get the very top end directors or auteurs in the movie space now that she used to ( Lee was directed by Ellen Kuras and her next film is directed by Scott Z Burns), which is unfortunate, but tends to happen to actresses as they get older, even the very respected ones like Winslet.

I touched on this a bit in a PM to ibbi , but wanted to expand... Winslet is absolutely hilarious, not just in the broad physical comedy, but also in the smaller, more character-driven moments. I don't love this show, but it's 100% worth watching just for her - I don't think we've ever seen this kind of comedy from her before? She completely sells the show's bizarre tonal shifts. Martha Plimpton, Master Thespian (that's her full name) is so magnetic as the condescending American Senator who comes to "check" Winslet's character - their verbal sparring is a delight - so rare to see two actresses of this caliber together! Frears direction is quite impressive - maybe even operatic in scope - and he works wonders with actresses.

I really wanted to love this… for Kate.
Winslet is amazing, as always. She nails the zany, erratic nature of the Chancellor. Schoneaerts is good too and they have good chemistry, relative to their roles.
But I don’t know that I care for the plot at all - nothing that warrants making this into a whole miniseries tbh. Also those opening credits are so dreadfully long.
The palace itself is eye candy though omg

Yeah, I'm only gonna be watching for him. I love Winslet and dug her performance in it, but didn't find the overall story too compelling.
