I've seen a measly 12 films so far this year, but still felt like throwing out some favourite performances of the year so far.

Definitely Butler in Elvis. HM's to Kidman in The Northman, Cage in Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz in Batman, and Natalie Portman in Thor.
Butler and Kidman are the only of these I see being a factor in lineups at the end of the year, though. A lot of good stuff to come.

Not much tbh....... Ioana Bugarin and Emanuel Parvu - Amazing in my beloved Miracle (2021 / 2022) by Bogdan George ApetriI also really liked Maika Monroe in Watcher........ Not quite at that ^ level but Aubrey Plaza is quite impressive in Emily The Criminal which I guess isn't officially out yet .....and Rakel Lenora Fløttum gives one of the best child performances of recent years in The Innocents - and she's a newcomer. Also the actress Sam Quartin gives a better performance as lead singer of The Bobby Lees - an actress also as a Rock singer - than I've seen in almost everything this year in the movies .....but I guess that doesn't count   |

I've never been that impressed with his acting but part of what makes Northman so entertaining is how much he committed to the bit of playing a vengeful psycho beefcake Viking. It's completely unlike anything he's done and it's so much fun to watch  other good ones: Jenna Ortega in the Fallout, Bowen Yang in Fire Island, Mark Rylance in The Outfit, Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere, Dano in The Batman, Adeel Akhtar in Ali & Ava. |

The movie is, in my opinion, quite excellent but I'd hesitate to recommend it to anyone who's not a fan of Terence Davies. I'm also not sure if it'd be the best place to start if you're unfamiliar with his stuff. But still, for me Benediction is a pretty powerful and beautiful experience. And Lowden's performance caught me completely by surprise. It's not that I wasn't a fan - I just never really saw anything too special about him. But he knocked it out of the park here which shouldn't be too shocking because Davies is able to milk amazing performances out of his leads. Lowden's really amazing - funny, acerbic, passionate and deeply moving. I don't know what the future will bring but I can easily see him staying in my Best Actor top 5 for good. |

Haven't seen much but Penelope Cruz in Official Competition, Adam Sandler in Hustle, Jack Lowden - Benediction, Pedro Pascal in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Tim Roth in Sundown are standouts. And impossible to overlook Tom Hanks in Elvis, but not sure where I land on that one yet.
