This is the latest from David O. Russell. It's a historical mystery comedy, starring Christian Bale, Margo Robbie, John David Washington, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldaña, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon, Taylor Swift, Rami Malek and Robert DeNiro. Russell directs, writes, and co-produces the motion picture.
Russell has an excellent track record at the Oscars. The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were all nominated for picture, director, screenplay, editing, and at least three acting nominations. Joy received lukewarm reception, but still managed to get a Best Actress nomination. It also scored a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy/Musical and an ACE EDDIE award for Best Editing in a Comedy or Musical.
Amsterdam marks his first film since 2015.
Do you think the movie is going to be a major Oscar contender?

Could be looking at nominations across the board.
Picture Director Screenplay Actor Actress Supporting Actor Supporting Actress Cinematography Editing Costume Design
maybe a random Sound nomination throw in too if they really go crazy for it.

For now I don't see much reason to believe that it won't become a big contender. The prestige factor is certainly strong with this one. If it's strong enough I can definitely see DOR as a very real threat to win Original Screenplay. We just need to wait and see if AMPAS members have missed him enough.
If I were to play the oracle game now, I'd say that it turns out to be a second-tier top 10 placer with nominations for BP, Screenplay, Costumes, Editing and Actor.

I can't be the only one thinking this looks like a failed Coen Bros ripoff.

I can't be the only one thinking this looks like a failed Coen Bros ripoff. Not just you. I thought it looked like a highlight reel from a lesser season of Fargo. Could be good in context, but it's O. Russell -- the man doesn't understand human interaction.

Wait...You're telling me the guy who groped his niece, put Nolan in a headlock, was such a dick that Clooney knocked him out AND made Amy Adams cry, doesn't understand basic human interaction?!? I for one am shooketh.

I wasn't stating it like it was brand-new information. Hence the heavy sarcasm Your subtext is already much more nuanced than anything O. Russell is capable of writing.

I can't be the only one thinking this looks like a failed Coen Bros ripoff. It looks like something between a Wes Anderson picture and a Coen Brothers ensemble piece.

Did you know that Drake is one of the executive producers? I know you're a big fan of his. I hear he started from the bottom.

I can't be the only one thinking this looks like a failed Coen Bros ripoff. NCFOM is in my top 10 all-time but shit like Hail, Caesar! or Intolerable Cruelty would be a bottom 2 DOR movie for me, along with the dreadful Joy. Coens are nowhere near consistent enough to warrant shitting on O. Russell.

To answer the original question, I feel like there's almost no way it doesn't at least hit six nominations. Picture, at least one acting award (Robbie's got Babylon so do they put her in supporting to go for the double nod?), Screenplay, Editing, Production Design, Costumes. Bale's two for two with O. Russell, so I'd put him in there as a likelihood because it's clear he's doing a Thing in this trailer and they love it when Bale does a Thing.
O. Russell himself is the big question mark. I think his past misdeeds are going to come up, and I think there's a very real chance they may try to minimize his involvement in the campaign trail as much as possible, and content themselves with him getting in for Original Screenplay rather than pushing him hard for Best Director. But he's definitely a threat because they really fucking love the guy. Or at least they did. This is his first rodeo post-#metoo and a lot of shit is going to come back up and this will be the test to see whether he can weather the storm.

Unlike his previous films critics reaction will be lukewarm this time and film twitter's gonna bash it and the GA will pass.
Won't even get a single nomination.

I think they’ll almost certainly campaign Robbie in Supporting even if it’s category fraud. Makes sense to go for the double nod and not compete against her nom for Babylon.

While that's true, it depends on the other supporting ladies and whether they think they someone like Anya Taylor-Joy might have more winner upside than Robbie. Of course, they would probably put their effort behind both.

Not currently predicting it for anything because it's going to be such a crowded season, but it's also something I could see getting 10 nominations. We'll see!

Saw the trailer again on the big screen and it played very well. Imagine this is likely to score a lot of noms. And Bale looks like he’s having a lot of fun in a goofier role, def see him having a great chance to score a Best Actor nom.
