Guess you just assumed no Thing Supporting player stood a chance against Hauer?

Haven't seen Blade Runner in years and haven't really wanted to. On the other hand The Thing is just so compulsively rewatchable. A perfect thriller/horror that you can keep coming back to again and again. Last time I watched it was right after Brimley passed and I got a new appreciation of how good he is there as this paranoid guy on the edge, isolating more and more from his colleagues into a cocoon of insanity. He's the conduit to the viewer's anxiety and two steps ahead of everyone else. He knows they're all fucked. When he tells you to watch Clark, you had better fucking watch Clark!

Guess you just assumed no Thing Supporting player stood a chance against Hauer? Exactly (even though Keith David and Wilford Brimley are both beloved to me). I also left Editing off because, well, Blade Runner has ninety-seven different edits out there, and The Thing is a flawlessly cut movie.

He's not at all who you'd think would work for that sort of role on paper, but that and Absence of Malice were an astonishing one-two punch of badass erudites just owning their limited screentime.

I didn't even finish The Thing. I like Carpenter, but it's by far his most overrated movie IMO. Far eclipsed by many movies it influenced. The Hateful Eight makes it look like The Boondock Saints.

I was legit shocked by how lousy I thought it was, as I'm a Carpenter fan, and thought something QT revered that much would have to be amazing. Nope. I think it's a bad movie, very repetitive and poorly written. Blade Runner is overrated, but good, and the cinematography/production design is glorious beyond belief.
