Um that's a Garbo-level retirement tbh. The best French actress in a generation - the modern Huppert imo - hopefully she reconsiders. Loved her since I first saw her and I've been on the bandwagon for years ........that "woke" BS reason is quite disheartening and stupid .....ah well.

I don’t blame her one bit. Such a shame that the toxicity of the industry has caused one of our best actors to call it quits.

given her recent absence this isn't too surprising. She's been the victim of abuse/assault and it looks like the César walk-out was the last straw for her. What a shame. French cinema doesn't know what it lost. But she couldn't have asked for a better swan song than Portrait of a Lady on Fire which will be remembered as one of the defining feminist masterpieces of all time. Hopefully she can come back someday in some capacity or another but if not, there's a wealth of her work to keep enjoying and treasuring.
Au revoir, Adèle

I read this as "Adele Haenel has died" before clicking on something else and stopped saying "WHAT!?"
This isn't as bad. I can understand someone going "screw it."

Coming into this thread, I knew at least one person would dismiss her decision as woke BS...
Yay for minimizing the experience and reasoning of someone whose gender you don’t share!

I resemble that remark I would say noticing only that part of my post and ignoring the fact that I said this was a "Garbo level" retirement is kind of unfair and a way of "minimizing MY experience" supporting her artistry. Um. I don't share a lot with her in addition to her mere gender........ I also don't share an occupation or a big fat paycheck with her either or the same worldview at all. But the fact that I have a wang hardly makes me unqualified to say she sounds like a wackadoodle naive child? ........... as much as I love her acting - and you can look it up, i'm pretty much as pro-Adele as you can be....... I don't think she was ever mentioned on MAR until I mentioned her first (maybe - ammirite? (just sayin' )).............to me, I'd stay in the industry and fight the woke good fight (or whatever that is) .......but maybe I'm just more heroic than she is - because after all I'm a man (um, kidding) - she doesn't owe me anything, so sure retire at 33, do what you want, come back whenever you want, if you want - didn't mean to minimize your experience Adèle ......just meant to say your comments sound wacky. I'd say the same thing if Louis Garrel said what Haenel did, but alas what would this boards (also predictable btw) Woke Police accuse me of then .......since we share the same gender? Grrrrrr...........Bah! Humbug!

First time in my life I wish I lived in France. Hopefully Sciamma writes her something she can't say no too ASAP.

I've seen her in BPM, Water Lilies, and about 40 minutes of Portrait of a Lady on Fire (I didn't care for the movie at all). She's always fine/good-ish, but I wasn't remotely gobsmacked by anything she did. And I speak/understand French (or at least used to), which makes this reputation of hers even odder to me.

I don't think this is the last we'll see of her. Her comments leave the door open for her to continue working with filmmakers she trusts to work against the reactionary politics of the industry. Less of a concrete retirement and more of a "I don't wanna be in politically shitty films."

Your support of her as an artist isn’t at all relevant to the discussion though. I'm not supposed to take issue with you calling her reason for quitting “stupid” (later softened to “wacky”) just because you’re a big fan of her work? She could have been Kate Hudson or anyone else you’re not a fan of, and it would be the same thing... what matters is that she’s a woman in the film industry with a lived experience that you don’t share. Since you don’t share the same gender, occupation, sexual orientation, ethnicity/country (things that obviously inform one’s life experience and worldview), that sort of begs the question of what makes you think you’re qualified to say she sounds like a “wackadoodle naive child” on this particular issue, and how does your life experience bring you to that dismissive conclusion of yours. As a man, it’s easy to say what you’d do if you were her….. but you’re not her and you can’t know her lived experience that brought her to this decision. Part of what we do know is that director Christophe Ruggia sexually harassed her from the time she was 12 to 15, and following the experience, she already considered abandoning acting at that point. I’d say they would accuse you of either wrongly denying the existence of systemic racism and sexism in the film industry, or callously denigrating someone who chooses not to be part of a toxic system… since those are the only reasons I can think of for scoffing at such comments. (And what can I say, predictably questionable posts beget predictable policing...)

I can respect that. Given all that she's been very passionate, vocal and bold about, along with her traumatic experience as a young woman in the industry, this doesn't come as a shock. It's my understanding that the abuse by a director made her quit acting before.
" is now solely focused on working in the theater but didn’t rule out making films with fellow activists like Gisèle Vienne and Céline Sciamma"
And perhaps this part gives a glimmer of hope to her fans.

You still get the luxury of calling me "callously denigrating" - I get the luxury of calling Adèle Haenel or her reasons at least - wacky, naive, childish. Our predictable positions, remain, intransigent. * Yeah, I’m emphasizing her gender because that part of her identity is integral to her life experience and worldview, which led her to her decision to retire. Saying she’s a just a person in the film industry is ignoring a crucial aspect of the issue. You’re calling her childish and naïve and implying she’s being irrational without explaining how… seems to me you’re the one lashing out. Not sure why you’re framing her behavior as “taking her ball and going home,” suggesting she’d be more right to stay in the industry and fight a broken system. Sometimes people “take their ball and go home” because they simply don’t want to play with bullies or play in games that are rigged, and they don’t always have the energy or capacity to fight back all the time. It’s not wrong for an artist to admit that they have limits. That’s not chickening out or being weak, and it’s wrong to expect everyone to be a certain kind of fighter because it’s not in everyone’s heart to engage that way. * Well no, of course no one has the right to chart the course of your opinion… people are just less likely to take your criticism seriously because of how disparate your life experience is with Haenel’s (and people feel free to comment negatively on Amber Heard all the time because she’s a proven shitty person… not sure how she’s relevant at all as a point of comparison). I give Haenel a “long leash” because I don’t view her comments on Bruno Dumont as unprofessional/crass/childish. Not sure what else to tell you… the burden shouldn’t be on me to explain my empathy and goodwill towards her (which, as a human response, shouldn’t need justification anyway), but rather the only person in this thread disparaging her. * I didn’t say you denied the existence of systemic racism or sexism in the industry… I merely presented it as one of two possibilities that would explain why one might scoff at her comments, hence the either/or construction.

I get where she's coming from though, the feminist tumble dryer is rubbish too! I'm an artist, not a laundress!

Lol, this is the first time anyone’s ever accused me of “Woke Lecturing” them… my female, gay, and POC friends irl would be proud of this milestone! If I ever get a position as an adjunct college instructor, I should add “Woke” in front of my “Lecturer” title in my email signature (right next to my preferred pronouns of course). And sorry to disappoint, but I haven’t finished my Woke Lecture yet! (Lectures tend to go longer than planned if a student feeds the instructor more material to discuss at the end of a class session… which often results in other people in the class hating that particular student) So Haenel doesn’t deserve your empathy and shouldn’t be allowed to criticize an industry just because she has profited from it? If every rich person stayed silent about the systemic issues plaguing the industry that made them rich, nothing would ever change. Would you have found it more acceptable if she had quit back when she was 15 years old after Ruggia sexually harassed her because she hadn't profited from the industry "as much" at that point? So because she decided to persevere and continued to pursue her passion for acting in an industry that she hoped would get better (see her comment, “I tried to change something from within”), her decision to retire now is her acting ungrateful or something? How do you know her younger self wasn’t simply idealistic about the trajectory of the industry instead of cynically choosing to take part and participate in a toxic system you might assume she would have known would hardly improve? You might be expecting a lot of her younger self. I just find your take to be grotesquely cynical, so forgive me if my criticism of your opinion is a little on the harsh side. As Woke Lecturer, my office hours are 11am-noon MWF, or by appointment.

I just find your take to be grotesquely cynical, so forgive me if my criticism of your opinion is a little on the harsh side. * I do not know what happened with Ruggia - obviously I feel bad and empathize with her ON THAT, if that is true (even us subhumans can do that) - I haven't followed it - is this acknowledged - was he charged? I'll look it up - I meant to do that but with work, and life commitments and responding to you (um) I haven't had a chance. * You mght find my take grotesquely cynical - yet ........... not to be dismissive I don't care at all I'm not trying to persuade anyone in this case...... you saw my post (aggressively replied to it, that's fine, no foul) and have restated your case 4 or 5 times at least. If I'm grotesquely cynical - you're comically committed to this topic and MY feelings on it. * All I said was that she's a great actress, a personal favorite and her retirement - if it holds, it is seismic ( Garbo-like, as I put it), best of luck to her but she behaves (imo) stupidly, like a child - who walked out of the Cesars when she knew that was "performative" - she knew who was nominated - she knew who was likely to win - when she didn't get her exact way and going by this interview - walking away from her craft because things don't seem to have gone exactly her way in an industry she was in for a decade + and producing and directing exactly ZERO films on her own - in this industry despite having the resources to do both if she would like..........and when a film director ( Dumont) who she unprofessionally and crassly dragged into this latest episode didn't bend to her exact demands. That's factual. It's a perfectly logical POV to have on an actress I'm inclined to give a pass to .........but not exactly YOUR pass (imo). * I JUST wrote about this yesterday in a whole different post - about artists rebelling against their own artistic medium - and its irony - and how their intent can be wilted (imo) vs. their best (like Haenel's) intentions. My feelings on all of that are in that thread / post..........and that was a far more provocative and cynical post than anything I've said lately.
