Here, the dissident feminist scholar shares her five favorite actresses.AVA GARDNER“She was my first goddess. The moment in Show Boat where she stands on the shore, watching everything she loves disappear, is something I’ll never forget.”ELIZABETH TAYLOR“One of the greatest actresses. A luscious, ripe, opulent fruit. She wields the sexual power that feminism cannot explain and tried to destroy.”KATHARINE HEPBURN“The WASP prince of my fantasies. Boldly independent, childless, witty and self-determined.”SHARON STONE“The princess of pro-sex. Someone who was daringly, frighteningly in touch with her libido and willing to share it freely.”KATE WINSLET“She’s the worthy successor to the great butch women of the 1930s. That scene where she wields the axe in Titanic is priceless.”So... What do you think?

I have said this a lot on here but Nicole Kidman is the modern Taylor in way more ways than she's the modern Streep, Huppert or......Winslet. Of all the actors we compare, I can't believe it doesn't come up more between them.....they have a lot of obvious overlap...... Like that sounds like she's advocating for the campiest roles (I guess?) Reflections in A Golden Eye, X, Y and Zee, Secret Ceremony........which is kind of ....right for Taylor. That's quite a swipe at her feminist colleagues I guess too.....that sounds like Pauline Kael's type of provoking, jabbing language I also like how she throws in real life appraisals of their work a bit - "childless" for Hepburn.....hmmmmmm........sometimes you can pull out things like that in an actor's appeal .......but sometimes that takes you down a rabbit hole and you can get lost. ELIZABETH TAYLOR “One of the greatest actresses. A luscious, ripe, opulent fruit. She wields the sexual power that feminism cannot explain and tried to destroy.”

Of course, it's opinion. I'll give mine...
AVA GARDNER Not seen enough of her work.
ELIZABETH TAYLOR I would put her top 20-15ish.
KATHARINE HEPBURN One of the greatest but not the greatest IMO.
SHARON STONE No, no, no. Maybe it's because I haven't seen enough of her work but her awful performance in Basic Instinct 2 is the reason she's definitely not in my top 5 or even 50.
KATE WINSLET See Liz Taylor.

Are you familiar with her scholarship at all? Not really - but I've liked her opinionated, and caffeinated POV on wide variety of things when I've stumbled across them..........her thoughts on Madonna were something I always wanted to take a course in!
