I'll admit, I don't watch SNL very often but I'm curious as to who think are the best and worst. For me, based on the skits/episodes I've seen...
Steve Martin Alec Baldwin Christopher Walken Tom Hanks Justin Timberlake Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Jim Carrey John Goodman Melissa McCarthy Jon Hamn
The worst would either be Paris Hilton or Steven Seagal. Both were lifeless, energy-less, and unfunny.

This is really difficult because there have been a lot of great and really bad hosts over the years. Plus, it feels like some have an advantage if they were in a classic skit that SNL plays on one of its specials because at least then I just remember the good and not how they did in the sketches that didn’t work.
The Best I think you have to automatically include people who have hosted the most like Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, and Christopher Walken.
Then out of the 5 or more club, I like Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Melissa McCarthy, John Mulaney, and Justin Timberlake. Of course former cast members Will Ferrell and Tina Fey; although like Mulaney I guess it feels a bit unfair because they’ve worked on the show so I do think that gives former cast members/writers a leg up.
I know that’s more than 10 already lol, but people who I have enjoyed hosting that aren’t in the 5+ club yet include Matt Damon, Larry David, Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, Ryan Gosling, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, and Emma Stone.
The Worst: I don’t know If there will be many older hosts as I probably forgot about them unless they were really bad.
Felicity Jones has to be on there. Poor thing I could see her nerves getting to her I some sketches.
Kim Basinger. I don’t remember her in the sketches, but her monologue with then husband Baldwin was awful.
Robert DeNiro. I never watched this episode all the way through because there was a time I used to work every Saturday night and really didn’t care about watching the latest episode, but I remember a lot of people talking about how awkward he was and watching some of it, I’d have to agree that he’s just not cut out for it.
January Jones. I never watched all of her episode either, but I remember her being another one that wasn’t cut out to host.
Pamela Anderson. Yikes they played her episode last weekend, and parts of it were as painful as I remembered. She tried, but sometimes they just don’t know what to do with the hosts.
Nancy Kerrigan. Athletes usually do well, but another seemingly humorless person that the writers obviously didn’t know what to do with.
Awkwafina - Probably not all time worst, but she’s another one where I felt like they didn’t know how to write for and put her in a lot of bad sketches.
I never saw their episodes, but I have no problem believing that Paris Hilton and Steven Seagal are among the worst too. You really need to have a sense of humor about yourself to be good host, imo, and those two definitely do not have that at all.
Also not a fan when they sometimes have a famous child actor host. I don’t think they’ve been terrible that I remember, but I think it restricts the writing.
People i underestimated: Kim Kardashian - I thought she would suck, but big props to whoever wrote her monologue and to the writers for putting her in sketches that used her well.
Hosts I think are overrated: Dave Chappelle - Might get a lot of disagreement over this. His first time hosting is one of the best imo, but I can’t believe he won an Emmy for his second time hosting which had a big dropout quality from his first show. I know I’m forgetting a lot, but I always get some laughs when they’re on.
Elon Musk - Okay he didn’t horribly bomb like I thought, but he still sucked.

The best are usually the ones that are invited a lot, because they know they work- Steve Martin, John Goodman, Christopher Walken, Alec Baldwin (though the latter shouldn't have played Trump for so long) and John Mulaney.
From the ones that didn't appear that often, but were still pretty good, Jon Hamm is certainly way up there. Larry David was pretty good too, though of course that was in part because he was such a brilliant fit for Sanders he could be terrible at everything and would still work. Recently, I think Oscar Isaac was pretty good.
The worst are usually the people who were not actors or comedians, with few exceptions.

There were a few articles I found on worst hosts ever that I meant to post. I had to comment on the last two weeks though. They were pretty bad imo, even in comparison to how low the bar really is. I don’t think it was the hosts’ fault both weeks; although I don’t think Lizzo would have been a good host even with Bette writing because of how she kept breaking. Sometimes it’s funny when it happens like with that one Debbie Downer sketch or when Ryan Gosling kept breaking during the first alien sketch, but when the sketch isn’t even funny, imo, it just becomes annoying again at least to me it does. Anyhow I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks the writing has gone even more downhill than usual. SNL Season 47 Episode 18
