I've said this in this thread that Hanks stature as an all-timer is pretty secure - particularly with his filmography - and the range of his classic movies - it's a lot. But in the short term a course correction is needed because he's starting to be the "problem" to many people after these last 2 movies at least.
It's the curse of American actors of the 80s class - if you could group them all together - Penn, Hanks, Washington, Cage, Spacey, Dafoe - you'd have something everyone could totally agree on - but individually - well all have significant drawbacks - either in their talent, or their work, or "star" arc.
I said he was an "on paper" threat to win a 3rd Oscar for Elvis until we actually saw Elvis - and when that doesn't happen - and you are closer to 70 than you are to 60 (um).......go to TV.......TV helps a lot of problems - you can control the timing of the shoot more, develop a piece for yourself, people can see you on a stage scooping up awards too ffs - Pacino, Winslet, CumbyDammit, Williams and several others either saved or jump started their acting careers on TV .....and went back to movies
You don't need a movie hit right now, you just need an acting hit .....

I feel like if we see this from Tom's perspective, he doesn't need or is going for any kind of hit at all, TV or movie, Oscar bait or indie cred, award or no award. He's at supremely comfortable stage of career where few people reach without devolving into a paycheck or phoning it in mode. Even Denzel at one point could be accused of sliding into paycheck mode with his low-brow action days what with Unstoppable, No Pain No Gain, Equalizer 1, etc. streak.
I find such career evaluations "he needs to do this or that" extremely judgmental and subjective without taking account of a guy's career stage. It's not like he's a one franchise wonder struggling to find a footing post-franchise. Both the movies and the performances of his post Captain Phillips performances are of a level many succesful actors' entire careers are made of. He's at a very high plateau and his current projects' risk/safety levels varies in a very limited range but still at a higher plateau that most actors can dream of in their post-heyday stages.

I won't say he's out of the loop. He might get criticism for both films but "Elvis" is still a commercially successful film. Nothing wrong with having a divisive performance in your resume, it means you tried to something different which is how people will remember it in the future. The performance already has some defenders anyway. As for "Pinocchio", people will forget that it exists in a week and it's easy to understand that he find it hard to say no to Zemeckis who brought him an Oscar win and another nomination. "Asteroid City" will probably be a hit, might even get him another nom and "A Man Called Otto" can turn out to be good also. He's doing alright.

I wasn't around much for awards season, but it's wild to me that Hanks won 2 Razzies this year . Admittedly he fully deserved it for Elvis, but I still thought they'd think the nomination was enough for someone of his status in Hollywood. Must have been a dark day in his agent's office when that news came through. Super awkward that Austin Butler received nothing but praidse for his performance as Elvis as well. Trying to stretch never works out for Hanks. I'm sure he'll b o unce back with some good projects, but it's tough to see where the next interesting performance (that's actually good) will come from. He'll be ok if he sticks to his bread and butter of all-American nice guys (of which arguably nobody alive does better than him). Very fine actor, within his limitations, but those limitations have always been pretty glaring.

Well, to me... he's been usually a fine actor, been interesting a few times (The 'Burbs, Philadelphia and The Green Mile come to mind atm)... Around mid-00s until now I've lost interest in stuff he makes. Hasn't worked with "hip" directors of the day and when he has the result wasn't great: Haven't seen Captain Philips yet, turned The News of the World off mid-through, better had done the same with Elvis. David Pumpkins was a 15.min joke but still the last great thing he did.

His last scene alone rivals any of the professed "GOATs" at their peak.

I watched Elvis yesterday and he is very bad in it but all actors have bad performances, his career is fine and he is one of the best ever, in the top 10.
