The Power of the Dog leads the pack with 12 Oscar nominations. 8 out of the 12 come from the major categories. It is the only 2021 film to score acting, directing, writing, and editing nominations. This year it won best picture prizes at the Globes (Drama), DGA, BAFTA, and Critics Choice awards.
CODA, despite only 3 Oscar nominations, won the most major Guild awards. They took home trophies for SAG Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur), SAG Ensemble, PGA, and WGA Adapted.
Don't Look Up just won the WGA for Best Original Screenplay.
West Side Story won the Globe for Best Comedy/Musical and SAG Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose.
King Richard took home the ACE (Drama) and SAG Actor for Will Smith.
Licorice Pizza kicked off award season with a Best Picture win at the NBR awards. Drive My Car won the Globe for Best Non-English Language Film and critics circle wins at New York Film Critics, L.A Film Critics, and National Society of Film Critics awards.
Since the inception of the Producer's Guild awards, all Best Picture winners won at least two major Guild awards AND won at least the PGA, DGA, or WGA award. CODA is the only film this year to fulfill both functions.
But at the same time, CODA has obvious handicaps. Only 3 nominations. No DGA nomination. No BAFTA Best Film nomination. Only scored 1 out of the 3 major non-acting Oscars. If it won Best Picture, it would break at least 4 long-standing Oscar trends. Examples - 1933's Cavalcade was the last time a movie won Best Picture with less than 5 Oscar nominations. 1948's Hamlet was the last time Best Picture just had one major non-acting nomination.
The Power of the Dog's argument rests on the DGA win AND the number of Oscar nominations it received. It is pretty tempting to go with a film which (a) Won the DGA award and (b) is the only film nominated for acting, directing, writing, and editing.
The ball is in your court. Who wins Best Picture?
