Nobody ever works in American movies - everyone is either in a very narrow range -a cop, FBI / CIA Agent. an ex-cop (um) - or don't technically work at all - they are independently wealthy, or a drug dealer or you know............. Batman. What are some roles for you where the actor captured the job of the character they were playing - not just that they happened to do that job but that the job was crucial to selling the entire role to an audience - and when you think of the movie you think of how they evoked the job through the performance - not just that they could play an emotion within the movie regardless of their job. I've listed a lot of men below - but some females are obviously desperately needed - not a hooker - it's covered people! Actor / Movie / Occupation - and photos of an actor / actress playing an actor / actress Newman - The Verdict - Lawyer Hanks - Captain Phillips - Ship Captain DDL - There Will Be Blood - Oil Tycoon Stewart - Flight of the Phoenix - Airplane Pilot Douglas - Ace In The Hole - Reporter Pacino - You Don't Know Jack (TV) - Doctor Michael Redgrave - The Browning Version (1951) - Teacher De Niro - Raging Bull - Boxer De Niro - Taxi Driver - Taxi Driver ( ) Finney - The Dresser - Actor Nicholson - The Shining - Writer
McDormand - Fargo - Police Officer Streep - Silkwood - Lab Worker Burstyn - Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore - Waitress Fonda - Klute - Prostitute Louise Fletcher - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - Nurse Naomi Watts - Mulholland Drive - Actress

Another good DDL one is Phantom Thread as a fashion designer. I love the small detail of the close up shots of his thumb which have the needle holes in them.

fixed Jack has portrayed a couple of authors as you know... I'd go with As Good As It Gets. NS The Dresser but "the actor" itself has been covered memorably a bunch of times...I'd give a shoutout to: Michael Keaton - Birdman - the "washed-up" actor Dustin Hoffman - Tootsie - the "gender-swapping" actor Leonardo DiCaprio - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - The B-list turned international cult star actoralso: Rosalind Russell - His Girl Friday - Journalist Alain Delon - Le Samurai - Hitman for hire Roy Scheider - All That Jazz - Theater director Adrienne Barbeau - The Fog - Radio announcer Anthony Hopkins - Remains of the Day - Butler
Bob Gunton - The Shawshank Redemption - Prison Warden Ben Stiller - Zoolander - Modeling Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd - Barber Michael Stuhlbarg - A Serious Man - Math teacher Amy Adams - Arrival - Expert linguist

The first one that came to my mind is Virginie Ledoyen in A Single Girl where she plays as a Hotel Employee. The film and her performance really capture the daily grind and mundanity of a job like that. Also Stephen Grahan - Boiling Point - Chef. Pretty obvious choice.

wonderful idea for a thread! Hamish Linklater in Midnight Mass as a catholic priest (if we're counting miniseries). This is one of the best on-screen depictions of what it would look like for a priest to really care about his parishioners. In addition to his disarming charisma and conversational skills, what stands out is how Linklater takes an interest in his parishioners. He pursues them relentlessly, breaking down their defenses with a smile and with genuine concern. He'd probably reconvert my atheistic ass in minutes but there are lots of great options: Anthony Hopkins in Remains of the Day -- butler Jack Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross -- salesman Denzel Washington in Malcolm X -- civil rights activist James Woods in Salvador -- photojournalist Peter O'Toole in The Stunt Man -- film director George C. Scott in Patton -- general harder to find women but some that come to mind are: Sissy Spacek in Coal Miner's Daughter (country singer) Sally Field in Norma Rae (union organizer) Holly Hunter in Broadcast News (news producer) and yeah Graham + Robinson in Boiling Point are a great recent example. I would love to see more films like that, it explores a workspace so realistically and deliberately. The narrative answer to Wiseman's direct cinema.

Peter Fonda's great performance - as a beekeeper - in Ulee's Gold (1997) is clearly one because the independence, isolation, control and patience and also in managing any risk are evident in his work are needed in what happens in the plot itself.

How about Editor-in-Chief of a fashion magazine: Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada?

Another Mann vehicle - Plummer and Pacino in The Insider - Newsroom reporter and producer. Mann is kind of the king of directing these types of performances. Caan in Thief, Peterson in Manhunter, Cruise in Collateral all great examples too...

How about Editor-in-Chief of a fashion magazine: Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada? This fits in with the Peter Fonda one I listed in Ulee's Gold - where he's a beekeeper - like if it wasn't for a movie what would we ever know about the details of that job? Streep's is so specific it goes beyond just "being the head of a generic magazine"

pacinoyes - How about another one for Streep... Would we say The French Lieutenant's Woman is the definitive film portrayal of a Victorian governess?
