Yesterday, I took quite a shot at Amy Adams - who I do like - but that sort of thing is what I do around here isn't it - um, ever see my posts on Russell Crowe - I don't think she's quite the equal to Chastain and I think she's "over-nominated" a bit - so with that in mind let's look at the whole class.......and keeping in mind that 40s can be a death valley for American actresses how would you rank the "usual suspects" of this class. Are any of these actresses "great" or are they rather an overrated or underrated class? Are any that you feel are over-nominated or under-nominated? Who am I forgetting - would you put Sarah Paulson in this group? Michelle Williams to me is the easy #1 and is a no-brainer, obvious "great actress" Chastain is the pretty easy #2 for me but people are closer to her than she is to Williams imoThen there's.........a lot of contenders Adams (the most nodded of the bunch), Portman, Dunst, Witherspoon - that is quite a battle isn't it? Who do you think will have the best later career also - or is best positioned for it right now? Dunst is 39 btw and turns 40 next month so we can include her.........

My personal ranking:
1. Kirsten Dunst 2. Michelle Williams 3. Jessica Chastain 4. Natalie Portman 5. Reese Witherspoon 6. Amy Adams
I think Dunst and Williams are always great, while Chastain, Portman, Witherspoon, and Adams can be great.

How I would rank them:
1. Michelle Williams 2. Kirsten Dunst 3. Jessica Chastain 4. Reese Witherspoon 5. Amy Adams 6. Natalie Portman
Michelle Williams is the best of the group, consistently delivering some really good, even great, performances. Dunst and Chastain have also some fantastic work under their belt, but also a few duds as well (Chastain more so). Witherspoon and Adams are solid I guess, but I, honestly, haven't been overly impressed by them in anything I've seen them in. Portman is dead last for me and she is probably among my least favorite actresses ever. The amount of times I found a performance of hers even tolerable can be counted on one hand.

Williams solidly ahead and I love some of the intersections the others have with her..... Dunst actually outacts her in Dick (1999), Chastain replaced her in Scenes from a Marriage.... Chastain's 2021 compared to hers (Venom 2) is worrying.... and why I think Chastain is a threat as they age bc she works a lot more, with a growing production company, and she's got GOAT guardians to impress: Pacino/Huppert.
Oh how about this cleverly timed ad... I think it made the rounds around 2010 when they were both nominated, Williams had a really dynamite year but Portman got the Oscar.
Outside of these six......... Juliette Lewis (48) is a favorite of mine and would be vying for my #2 spot, seriously. Also wanna mention Gaby Hoffmann (40) - another who came up as a 90s child actor, I'd like to see her in some bigger roles, and more movies, going forward.

Adams is clearly the best here for me. Outside of Streep and K. Hepburn she's got one of the deepest filmographies in terms of excellent performances.
Portman, Williams, and Chastain are pretty even for me, all good. Portman has the highest highs but is less consistent.
Witherspoon is great in Walk the Line, otherwise alright. EDIT- How could I forget Election where she is also terrific. Still solidly in 5th place among these though
Really don't get the Dunst love we've had on here in recent years. I really just think she's blank and listless in a lot of the stuff people love her in like Virgin Suicides, Melancholia, and Power of the Dog.

Adams is last for me. Wallpaper in too many roles, like she's confused and on xanax. Dunst and Williams are the most talented. I think Dunst has the highest ceiling, because her versatility is astounding, whereas Williams is somewhat more limited by her mousier tendencies. Williams has trouble going big like Dunst in that Showtime show On Becoming a God in Central Florida, but she is uncanny in her way. Portman is just too erratic for me; she can be legitimately awful, like in V for Vendetta, where it's clear she has some Emma Watson in her, though she can also be impressive (My Blueberry Nights, Beautiful Girls, Where the Heart Is, etc.). Witherspoon is in the middle for me. She's usually pretty good.

Jessica Chastain is the first (and so far, only?) case with me when an actor's "activism" has put me off of their work altogether. The amount of virtue-signaling interviews, headlines and tweets (not saying they're necessarily bad on their own; maybe she means well) that are collected in my mind at this point make it almost impossible for me to invest in her new roles / characters because they're not there anymore. I don't see anyone but Chastain in this coat or that; with this wig or those glasses etc.
I like Dunst and Williams more, Adams and Witherspoon have grown on me over the years and Portman's my least favorite.

This is how I see it:
1. Witherspoon - Based on Wild, Big Little Lies, and Freeway. My Top 3. I also really like Little Fires Everywhere, Legally Blonde, Election. She's definitely a Top favorite. I realize most people just like her but don't love her, but I see her as someone who never misses. None of her standout work misses the mark for me. Even Adams misses the mark sometimes, but Reese doesn't. In the early 00s, I just saw her as a cute celebrity but never evaluated her as an actress but ever since Wild - there seems to be a pretty strong turnaround towards a new type of image. I think she's a Laura Linney type actress now.
2. Adams - Always been a favorite ever since 2005 when she broke into the critical sphere. Now she has certainly went a different direction than I thought, and I do think her best work is from 2005-2010 but she's still strong enough to stand on the strength of her first 5 or 6 years. That was a really strong run featuring Junebug, Enchanted, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, and The Fighter. I actually don't think The Master and Arrival are on par with those - the ones I like mainly. I also always make a reference to her and Big Eyes when I'm talking about the size of a someone's eyes in my casual conversation. Lol.. that's her meme for me.
3. Williams - Unlike most people, I see her as Jen Lindley as Dawson's Creek primarily. She was a sweetheart before I saw her as an actress. Like Adams, she also had a really strong run in the late 00s, from 2008-2010. She's been surpassed by Carey Mulligan, Kristen Stewart, and Emma Stone in the 2010s, but I have faith she'll deliver a strong hit every once in a while. She's a very strong actress, with good craft, and she always has something new to say.
4. Dunst - Unlike most people, I see her more for 1999-2006. Stuff like Marie Antoinette, Bring It On, Spider Man, and Mona Lisa Smile. Those are the stuff I grew up liking, so she's mostly a "first favorite actress" kinda celeb for me - also taking into account Interview With a Vampire which some people don't seem to remember. She's mostly that than a critical giant which some people have started to see her as. I guess most people see her thru the prism of 2011 and after - I'm guessing that's her more recent surge and is why she's talked about so much lately.
5. Portman - Also, one of those unavoidable faces/celebrities in the early 00s that's done a lot for the indie film community and for lots of early 00s cinephiles. I mostly ignored her. I wasn't a huge fan of her in the early 00s. But then I saw Jackie which was a powerhouse, career topping performance - but delivered really late into her career where her perception was already determined more or less. It destroys every other performance from her by DOUBLE, maybe TRIPLE. That one performance has me with a mostly positive opinion on her. I might elevate her over Dunst, but not over Witherspoon, Adams, or Williams who are really high favorites for me.
6. Chastain - She's a no brainer DEAD LAST. Surprised she makes a dent on this list with a lot of great names here. She's a blip on my mental radar, carried mostly by her most recent performance. Like I forget she even exists sometimes, really. She just randomly came on for me in 2011 with a whole bunch of movies. That's also not to mention that while she had a couple of pretty good years in the early 10s (2011-2013), she went down to mediocrity fast (2014-2020). I mean who cares about stuff like Molly's Game, Ava, Wilde Salome whatever or the Zookeeper's Wife?

Maybe in the Julia Roberts movie star era. I think it's becoming antiquated (and it helps that these actresses for the most part look the same as they did 10- 15 years ago). Above all, I think the 20 year olds today are talented but they aren't cutting it as far as looking like fully grown women, mature enough to hold their own on the screen in a lot of necessary roles. I mean look at Cate Blanchett at 52 - that's a woman. Time may as well have not passed for her because she can command and be in demand. So can these women (for some reason I picture only maybe Witherspoon - as talented as she is - having trouble). I like all these actresses, so other than my #1 and #6, the ranking was hard... 1. Michelle Williams 2. Amy Adams 3. Kirsten Dunst 4. Reese Witherspoon 5. Jessica Chastain 6. Natalie Portman
