... or incomplete even?
(Not saying sometimes it doesn't *add* to their appeal somehow):

Awesome thread topic! It's sort of like movies ammirite - every good movie is too short, every bad one is too long...... Well, if you love Punk in any way ......a lot of songs like this......every great Ramones song.........a lot of songs on Paul Westerberg's 49:00.......there's The Beatles "And Your Bird Can Sing" which is definitely one......but the first band / album / song I always think about in this way is the most obscure band I ever recommend - which is really saying something if you know my music posts Sweet Baby - It's a Girl (1989) they made one of 1989's best albums, one of Power Pop's best albums, one of the best "it sounds like The Beatles! albums", never made a 2nd album so they are also one of the best "1 album and called it a career" bands and the entire record sounds like an amphetamine rush of 1963 / 1964 Pop music boiled down to just its essence - frantic choruses and all immediate starts and sudden stops. I love the band more than oxygen tbh....and you can play his song like 6 times in a row in the same time it would take you to play Jungleland or something......

Touched and Loomer by My Bloody Valentine. Both masterpieces, Loomer fits just about perfectly with Lost in Translation, and Touched has that industrial grunge sound to it. Two of 6, maybe 7 all-time favorite songs out of 11 from that album and even if I've gotten used to them being the length they are. Still I wonder how they would sound/what they could've done with them if they were longer.

The first one I thought of was Rockpile's "Now and Always" which is a song I love but I always want a third verse after the key change at 1:10
And one of my favorite Zombies songs, under 2 minutes. Too short but doesn't feel incomplete so much as a song that just gets the job done quick.

Also a lot of film score cues can be like this, by nature. Thomas Newman is kind of the master of packing brilliant shit into 1 minute or less that just makes me wish they were longer.
Some classical interludes and dances as well, kind of amazing how iconic this is for being only a minute:

The Jeanines Gotta Go
I am going to shout out this current duo again since I think they have a mastery of sound even though it's not really in my comfort zone. This album came out yesterday and is something of a classic of stuff I don't care about - 13 songs in 20 minutes......basically they remove all solos or anything extraneous at all....no current artist I can think of is as minimal as this.....

This should have been an era defining hit single, if they'd made it an actual song and not an interlude. It was a rare instance where the label was begging them to make a longer version of the track but they wouldn't budge. Later they had the same situation with Outdoor Miner and actually did make a full three minute version but then wouldn't go on Top of the Pops to play it for some silly reason. Wire just didn't want to be big.

The Smiths Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want
The very rare case of Morrissey being appropriately pithy

1:17 of hilarious, sociopathic lyrical genius.
Will you still love me when I don't love you? I sure hope you do It would be an ego boost
When I leave you, will you still be true Phone me up every night Ask me if I'm eating right?
'Cause I can't stay with you I've got other things to do But while I'm away, it sure would be great If you would wait for me Cherish my memory Keep my picture by your bed Remember all the things I said
And you know, if you would It would make me look good And everyone would say, "He's quite a guy"
I hate working, it's so stupid I'd much rather not have to do it If you really love me, honey Get another job and send me the money
If people knew that I could make you do that Then everyone would say, "He's quite a guy"

it’s roughly the length of an average song but it’s just over before you know it

The Riverdales (Ben Weasel / Danny Vapid (vocals)) No Sense 100 seconds longMost things on MAR make "No Sense" to me tbh........I don't get most of the MAR takes on movies, acting - at all, music, books, religion or politics.........I don't think the board knows the meaning of "iconic" for one thing....... and honestly, most of the females posted in the "Celebrity Crush" thread look like they ran the 100 yard dash in a 90 yard gym. Wtf. This song has a great line right at the start - "1 + 1 doesn't equal 3" .......now that line I totally get....... 100 seconds of genius:

I posted this once in the poetry thread but fits here too - it has to be the best 1 minute song without any music ever Amelia Fletcher led one half of a band I always argue was infinitely more influential than their work - and infinitely better than their shitty Twee Pop genre - Talulah Gosh. No albums, few recorded songs - but in their aesthetics - cultural, amateurishly musical, their fashion, and gender politics - they were in some ways a late 80s Smiths......Fletcher later made many albums, with many bands......... and I always liked this 1 minute poem of hers - So? - a capella from her band Heavenly this reminds me very much of Simon Armitage and his funny / not funny works : So I flirted a touch, so maybe I laughed too much So I teased you So I said lots of stuff you interpreted as love I didn't mean to So you felt sure you were mine, I was yours So I was dumb, not to make things clear before So you hurt deep inside when I talked with other guys So I noticed So you gave me your time, love and hope but I kept mine So I'm selfish But nothing I did or could ever have done Would justify what you did to me last night

Rock and Roll is dead.............Rock and Roll is a young man's game.
Not really - sounds like your problem - this song is from 2023.......the lead singer is in his mid-40s and is one of the best 1 minute songs of all-time - if there was such a thing - say you got problems..........I've got 'em too.........
