Three major screenplay contenders are not eligible here -- Belfast (Globe, Critics Choice), The Lost Daughter (The Scripter) and The Power of the Dog (Critics Choice). It is unfortunate, but that's how the Writer's Guild rolls.
65% of the time the Oscar winner has lined up with the Writer's Guild winner. This is true for both Adapted and Original.
The BAFTAs honoring Licorice Pizza and CODA really elevates their odds here.
On the original side, they have gone with a DGA nominee 16 out of the last 21 seasons. The exceptions were Eighth Grade, Her, Eternal Sunshine, Bowling for Columbine and You Can Count on Me. For adapted, they have gone with the DGA nominee 17 out of the last 21 years.
