Since Manchurian Candidate seems to be getting crapped on a lot here not really sure what the issue people have with Streep there. She's good in the movie even if not quite as good as Lansbury in the original.
And for an unpopular opinion I'd put the remake a half step above the original, which is pretty much an above average thriller that reached classic status due to the connection with the Kennedy assassination.

It's literally only two people on this thread crapping on Streep/Manchurian Candidate. "A lot" seems a big stretch. It's not significant in any way whatsoever, other than the OP highlighting it as something they hate. While the remake holds nowhere as much cinephile currency/capital as the original, it's generally regarded as a good film in it's own right, with superior performances, including Streep. I'm sort of with you. I think the remake is better, and I question the taste of people who can't appreciate at least the craft level (direction, performances etc) that went into it. It's a stunningly underrated film (because of the reverence the original is held in).

pupdurcs - Okay… for the record, I never said that I hated her in it. There actually isn’t a single performance of hers that I hate. I think she’s serviceable in a truly terrible film. However, I do think that she approached this part in a manner that was far too broad and far too obviously villainous. Her performance here, in my opinion, lacks any tangible depth - it’s almost comical in how obvious it is.

I consider myself a Streep fan, but god, is The Laundromat bad. Not only the movie itself, but it's earth-shattering that an actress this good could deliver something that bad. What do you all think of Mamma Mia!? From what I've seen, that would have been my second choice... somehow that movie is even worse than The Manchurian Candidate. I fucking hate Mamma Mia!, but I find her so endearing in that movie. The bright spot in the ugliest-looking musical of the 21st century.

Maybe the only time I really thought she was bad was in August: Osage County.

pacinoyes - I meant to post earlier that I watched Dancing at Lughnasa this afternoon, and I thought Streep's performance was really quite lovely! I liked the film much more than I was expecting to, as well.
