What would they be? (Sorry if there’s already a thread on this)
I think Belfast, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story would all be comfortably in the lineup. By sheer volume of nominations, I think Dune would be an easy one as well.
As for the fifth, that’s a tough one, because I don’t know if any of the nominees feel like the *obvious* number 5. I think through some serious passion votes, Drive My Car would be able to sneak in.
What say you?

Belfast CODA The Power of the Dog West Side Story
Dune v King Richard for the 5th.

Belfast Dune The Power of the Dog West Side Story
torn between Drive My Car (screenplay & director is a really compelling combo) and King Richard (five nominations apart from BP including editing) for the 5th spot, but I'm leaning more toward Drive My Car.

We will never know the "official result", but if I were to put on Sherlock Holmes hat (The Benedict Cumberbatch version), I would say these:
1. The Power of the Dog - For obvious reasons. 2. Belfast - PGA, DGA, SAGE, ACE nominations. 3. Dune - PGA, DGA, WGA, ACE + Technical achievement 4. King Richard - PGA, SAGE, WGA, ACE nominations + Will Smith buzz 5. Licorice Pizza - PGA, DGA, WGA, ACE nominations + National Board of Review win + Screenplay contender
West Side Story seems to be a popular choice on here, but I would be skeptical. It didn't get nominated at the ACE awards, and missed screenplay and editing.

Power of the Dog Belfast King Richard West Side Story Dune
Could definitely see CODA or Drive my Car in place of WSS or Dune. Think POTD, Belfast, and King Richard are easily top 3,

I’d genuinely like to know what the argument is for King Richard not being in the top 5?

Really weird & nonsensical that no one's putting LICORICE PIZZA as one of the Top 5, considering it got in for Director AND Screenplay. Which is more that I can say for a lot of the ones people are saying.
For the record, only 4 films got Director/Screenplay nods, and LP was one of them.

Because during the 5 nominee system a film getting nominated for Best Picture with 3 or fewer nominations was almost unheard of I can think of only 3 examples (Four Weddings and a Funeral, An Unmarried Woman and Deliverance) in about half a century. While films with director and screenplay nods (and often even more) would get snubbed just about once a year. Also there is literally another movie this year with the exact same nomination haul you aren’t saying anything about.

Thought of this thread after CODA's PGA win. For those who previously did not have it in the top 5, do you think it's a matter of the film surging late?

Add me in as another who don’t think CODA would have made it in a field of 5. A few months ago I would have went with what most everyone else did: Belfast, Dune, Licorice Pizza, The Power of the Dog, and either King Richard or West Side Story.

If they revoted right now I wonder if Coda would pull more nominations. (Actress, Supporting Actress and Director maybe?)

I’m not sure about Directing because that was a really tough category, and the nominations seem very highbrow lately. The other two I definitely think would be likely right now. I think Dench would have been the most likely to miss to Matlin, and Jones probably over Stewart. Maybe Cruz, but Cruz is a former winner who won several high profile awards.
