Well, he's got the range to do this. I mean, fuck, he won every TV award going for playing Liberace. Michael Douglas is an incredible actor. One of our greatest screen actors (I feel if he challenged himself on stage more during his career, he'd be up there with the Washingtons or Hopkins reputation wise). Somewhat underrated, despite all his accolades (Oscar winner, Emmy winner etc) and decades of stardom.
I suspect another Emmy and a slew of other major TV awards are coming his way.

Interesting project in a few ways. How hasn't there been any kinda Ben biopic yet? Took this long? Orson Welles played him twice, who knew? Douglas doesn't seem right for it at all. It's odd bc he was ( still is? ) lined up to play Reagan and that you can a lot more easily picture him doing. So it's a challenge and I like that. It's so out of his zone... a period piece big-name biopic. He's done nothing like that except Liberace but that played into and played up his style of front-and-center ego. This will be totally different, no? And so far from the "half him" characters he does so well (Solitary Man, Kominsky etc). My casting would get weird.... Stephen Root? James Spader? Or y'know.... Pacino came to mind besides obvious reasons: he looks more like Ben, he loves playing real life figures especially lately, and this was developed by Richard Plepler who was the HBO chief from 2007 to 2019, so they've worked together a lot actually. I wonder if it crossed his desk or if they went right to... Michael Douglas?

Ben Franklin in France? Yessss give us all the debauchery that that entails. He was a naughty boy The more you read the facts and rumors of his near-decade in France, the better it gets! Prob won't get the book but history buffs should be all over it. I love the opening line... “In December 1776, a small boat delivered an old man to France.”

Well, it's here. I think Douglas will probably nail this comfortably. He's one of the great film actors of his generation, and only managed to really start getting great roles in the late 80's, as opposed to most of his generational cohort, who got cooking in the early 70's at latest. But Douglas keeps proving time and time again, that ability wise, he's probably up there with the Pacinos, DeNiros, Nicholsons etc.

He's lacking a bit of Big Ben's girth in that photo, but aside from that, I'm intrigued.

Overrated, one note dramatic actor who suggests being constipated for intensity - his actual more impressive talent is in dark comedy bleeding into drama (BtC, Wonder Boys, KoC, War of the Roses, etc)
He does some of his best acting in The Kominsky Method playing an actor and mocking himself .....more of that, would be good, I think.....

Have you guys seen the Ken Burns documentary on Benjamin Franklin? It's not among Burns' best, but definitely worth watching.

Daniel Mays is an incredible character actor, and he worked on this. He seems incredibly hyped about working with Michael Douglas on this, and says he's seen all 8 episodes and it's one of the best things he's ever worked on.
Douglas has won 1 Emmy and recieved several nominations. This looks like a great opportunity to pick up his 2nd Emmy win.

TylerDeneuve I did see that docuseries and it was all right... a pretty standard play-by-play with some critical hindsight mixed in and I can't say I learned that much new about the man. I watched Burns' stunning U.S. and the Holocaust series shortly after and that did the Franklin series no favors lol.

Douglas looks good but IDK about that trailer. Really dark and glossy with an overaggerated "epic-ness" that I don't think a Franklin project needs. IDK, this isn't Outlander with sexy intrigue and assassinations, the guy was a horny diplomat. I was hoping for something more along the lines of John Adams just without those god-awful Dutch angles.

Franklin starts out with 67% on Rotten Tomatoes (with only 12 reviews) & 63 on Metacritic ( with 11 reviews). Too few reviews so far to really gauge where it will end up.
But one consistent in these early reviews, are the standout notices for the Great Michael Douglas for his performance as Benjamin Franklin. Douglas appears to be the best thing about the show, drawing praise from even critics that dislike it. Not sure why he had any doubters in the first place ( on here it was partially from Pacino fans who wished he was cast instead), but glad he's gotten such a strong reception
