I like Uncle Vanya as a movie - particularly Louis Malle's Vanya on 42 Street which I think is major stage to screen transfer and has a lot of components I love in the genre of "plays on film".........it's a kind of masterful adaptation, with insights on acting, Malle in general, film craft and theater history too
That I've read...The Seagull for sure. I have a very marked up copy that's among my plays. "They were gauging my insignificance!"
I've seen more of his adaptations which almost always yield strong perfs, the whole cast of Vanya on 42nd St as Pac mentioned..... Rampling in Cherry Orchard of course, Redgrave in Lumet's Seagull, Alan Bates in Olivier's Three Sisters and the other one w/ Geraldine Page and Sandy Dennis is alright.... etc!
