My favorite playwright... (Well, give or take Tennessee Williams.  ) What's your favorite of his works? I think my love for Charlotte Rampling and Cacoyannis' beautiful, delicate film adaptation predispose me to choosing The Cherry Orchard.  |

I like Uncle Vanya as a movie - particularly Louis Malle's Vanya on 42 Street which I think is major stage to screen transfer and has a lot of components I love in the genre of "plays on film".........it's a kind of masterful adaptation, with insights on acting, Malle in general, film craft and theater history too As a play - The Seagull is my favorite ...... |

![]() I share your interest in him. Bought this one very recently, and will start to read it sooner rather than later:  It has The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. Translated from Russian to Portuguese by perhaps the best literary translators in that language pair. So far, the only one I'm familiar with is Uncle Vanya, but I love its text. |

That I've read...The Seagull for sure. I have a very marked up copy that's among my plays. "They were gauging my insignificance!" I've seen more of his adaptations which almost always yield strong perfs, the whole cast of Vanya on 42nd St as Pac mentioned..... Rampling in Cherry Orchard of course, Redgrave in Lumet's Seagull, Alan Bates in Olivier's Three Sisters and the other one w/ Geraldine Page and Sandy Dennis is alright.... etc! |
