Okay, so I’ve already made some FYC’s, but because these are the ones I really want to push… FINCH - Best Visual Effects For the simple fact that after a certain point, I simply bought into the illusion that the robot was real. At no point did the film itself break the illusion, and it’s only because I reminded myself that it was a mo-cap role - a convincing one, at that - that I had finally snapped out of it. Jeff is truly an astonishing little creation. BELLE - Best Animated Feature A familiar, but beautiful spin on the classic Beauty and the Beast tale, Belle puts a fascinating sci-fi spin on the material. Setting much of its fantastical story within a digital world of avatars, of those who hide behind the anonymity of their creations to truly express themselves, because that’s when they’re at their most free. But that anonymity can also be a projection, a figure of dishonesty as much as it can be true expression, making noble gestures feel disingenuous behind a screen and headphones. It’s some weighty material to contend with, capped off by an unnerving, breathtaking, but ultimately cathartic and beautiful closing 20 minutes. The film is a stunner to look at, naturally, but truly a standout are the songs (“Lend Me Your Voice” deserving of its own nomination), which are magnificent regardless of which dub you watch. Just be sure to give this some attention. It’s a true diamond in the rough, and doesn’t deserve to be buried under the glut of Disney.

Also Abel Ferrara for Best Director. Zeros And Ones was probably the most creative and thematically relevant film of 2021 for me. A great work of art, which proved once again that Abel Ferrara is one of the best American directors working today.

Also, I’m being a little lazy here, but can I see some FYC’s for Performer of the Year? I kind of need more than Willem Dafoe to fill out my ballot

FYC Best Original Song - a great one from "The Souvenir: Part II". Loved it in the movie but didn't know it was original until I saw it on AW today. A must-hear!

Btw, folks, a question - is "Cyrano" gonna be eligible for Best Original Score? It was originally a stage production but the music was reworked for the film and was deemed eligible for Oscar consideration by AMPAS. I think it should be eligible here too but I'll understand it if all y'all disagree.
If it's not eligible for Score, I'm definitely FYC'ing it for Soundtrack.

Personally I wouldn’t, just because I feel like a good chunk of the material relies on the pre-existing songs, but I think we can include a vote in the Lead vs Supporting thread.

Again, I'll be fine with either option - I just need to know where to vote for it

Some more FYCs:
West Side Story for everything but especially Best Editing - let's not repeat the awful injustice inflicted by AMPAS and ACE. The film is stunningly put together with each cut bringing even more beauty and precision to the already exquisite musical numbers. I think it's about as perfect as editing gets which is especially important with this genre.
Licorice Pizza for everything but especially Best Cinematography - PTA, Bauman and their team deliver a total visual treat with the image showcasing incredible textures and juiciness. The colors just pop off the screen. Also please consider this film in Sound Mixing - the almost constant presence of music is just beautifully integrated with the dialogue and the sound effects, making the time period truly come to life.
Godzilla vs. Kong for Visual Effects and especially Sound Editing - the sound effects are absolutely extraordinary, from the grows of the beasts to the booms of the rockets. There's just so much great stuff here. Mechagodzilla's sounds are a particular treat.
Titane for Best Makeup - the main character's bizarre transformation is presented with remarkable detail.
And a couple of performances to remember:
LEADS: Joaquin Phoenix in C'mon C'mon John David Washington in Malcolm & Marie Cooper Hoffman in Licorice Pizza Lea Seydoux in France
SUPPORTING: Mia Wasikowska in Bergman Island Adele Exarchopoulos in Mandibles

Forget all the Encantos and Lucas - the best animated feature of the year is Belle
Please watch it before putting your Animated lineup together. Hopefully you'll love it as much as I did. The Soundtrack, Score and Song (I think we ought to focus on the final one) are my strong FYCs too.

Anti-FYC: Belle is the worst film of the year and one of the most poorly-written pieces of junk I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s good-looking dumpster fire. The best film - animated or otherwise - of 2021 is Flee.
