These quotes are often used (in the US) by Republicans to put down liberals - my question is are both true? If partially true - in what way and in what way false? The quotes are afaik not attributed to anyone (?) but have become a sort of famous shorthand. The second (I think?) is a twist on Frank Herbert's quote against Liberal and Conservative extreme-ism - and the first is often wrongly (I think) ascribed to Churchill (?) - the 2nd was also paraphrased this week by Tucker Carlson which wasn't the first time but I have heard it............but that I haven't heard in quite a while.
What are some others like these but as used by Democrats against Republicans? * "If you aren't a liberal when you're young, you have no heart, but if you aren't a middle-aged conservative, you have no head."
* "Every time you cut (or scratch) liberal, a fascist bleeds"

Both are "us vs them" bullshit that seeks to shut down any valid points the other side has to say and appeal to a base. Notice how both quotes are simply putdowns without any substance, never explaining anything. This crap is why I refuse to engage in politics, it makes people's brains rot.

Well, you ain't wrong martin ............but that's sort of why they ARE quotes and the initial post too - I mean they do mean something substantive for the people who use them. Can you think of any political related quotes that are short enough to be memorable ............but also cover anything with substance? I really can't tbh

If the Uruguayan people want to commit suicide, there will be no government that can prevent it. If the Uruguayan people want to save themselves, it is in their hands, and nobody else's, to do it. I am sure that the Uruguayan people want and will save themselves, and thereby save future generations. President Oscar Gestido (1901-1967). Six years later an eleven year old dictatorship started.-

Here the complete test in 1967, just a few months before he had a heart attack and died. This is even more an actual thing that it was in the 60s. Because almost all Latin American, + part of USA + part of Europe people wants suicide.- Mr. President of the General Assembly; Representatives of the friendly nations; lawmakers. In accordance with the provisions of our institutional order, a new period of Government begins today. This normal fact, fortunately almost routine in our civic tradition, is marked by an event of singular importance: today a new Constitution enters into full force, ratified by the highest majority of the citizens that our constitutional history records, coming from multiple political parties. . This auspicious fact allows us to predict with optimism that we will overcome the hard period that all Uruguayans must immediately face. Very little is appropriate for me to say today, because this is not a time for words but for action. Our past action is already known to the Republic. We have made a Constitution, a Constitution drafted without political factions, drafted with the sole intention of having a Constitution that would be an adequate instrument to govern. The Uruguayan citizenry, giving proof of extreme political maturity in what can be described as perhaps the greatest confusion that any electorate in the world has ever had to face, knew how to intuit the path to their salvation. Once this stage of institutional organization has been completed, and today the stage of social and economic recovery has begun, we give the Republic a Cabinet made up of honest and capable people. The Uruguayan people now have a Constitution that will be an adequate instrument to govern. You will have an honest, capable and dedicated governing team. But this happy combination of circumstances will be of no use if we do not achieve the most important condition, the essential condition for Uruguay to be saved. There is no Constitution, no Parliament, no Government, however honest and capable it may be, that can save a country that does not want to be saved. The political situation, like any situation, is transitory, ephemeral, and should never obscure perspective; the true perspective, which is the march of Uruguay towards the future, the march of Uruguay that is living the interspatial era. If the Uruguayan people are not aware of their responsibility, if the Uruguayan people are not aware that there is no legal organization or system of repression, no matter how brutal, that can replace a society that is not willing to coexist peacefully as a civilized society , then all of us, and from now on, must know that there is no possible salvation. If the Uruguayan people were willing to tear themselves apart; If the Uruguayan people were willing to turn Uruguayan society into a group of tribes, each one fighting for their interests, in a regression to the most brutal law of the jungle, to satisfy sectoral interests, without taking into account the interests of the community, then we would have to declare all Uruguayans that we are irrecoverable. The story abounds with examples that not only stone age societies have the exclusive heritage of the law of the jungle, tribalism and chaos, but also societies with a high cultural level like ours, such as an educational system like ours, they can come to proceed as societies immersed in the most primitive and blackest stages of human evolution proceed. It is not the time today, nor does the time we are living justify it, to make considerations of an economic or political nature, no matter how desperate our economic situation was - which the latter is - easy, even so, our problems would be, if these they were the only ones. There is no economic situation that cannot be overcome by a people willing to make sacrifices. There is no political crisis that cannot be overcome by a people willing to make sacrifices. There is no political crisis that cannot be overcome if the political leaders put the interest of the country before the transitory electoral demands, but there is no social situation that can be overcome if the people do not want to save themselves. The political situations, the economic situations – I insist they are essentially transitory and have a solution through the concerted action of men of good will. But there is something that history demonstrates beyond any doubt, and that is that there are societies condemned to disappear because their mentality is undermined, because their way of thinking and their way of reacting are beyond any possible recovery. Societies where the interests of each group take precedence over the national interest cannot survive, even if they have a government of gods. Uruguay has, it will only have a government of men. If the Uruguayan people want to commit suicide, there will be no government that can prevent it. If the Uruguayan people want to save themselves, it is in their hands, and nobody else's, to do so. I am sure that the Uruguayan people want and will save themselves, and thereby save future generations.

43 years ago today - 7 / 15 / 79 - US President Jimmy Carter gave this (in)famous speech which kind of sealed his doom and created the path for Ronald Reagan who argued Carter didn't get it ........that it really wasn't a crisis of confidence .......it was.....just....inflation .......2022 looking a lot like 1979 atm and "it's the economy stupid" sort of comes from this speech in a lot of ways.
"The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation."
