I haven't seen Belfast yet, so no spoilers please. Balfe got nominated for both the SAG and BAFTA. Satellite is the only place where Dench had been nominated for the film. Is it possible that many Academy members thought Balfe was in the wrong category and pulled a reverse LaKeith Stanfield? Does it have to do with Dench being a known and Balfe being new to the circuit?

They are more relevant than the bloody Satellites. It's a legitimate industry based award that has a level of crossover voting membership with AMPAS (not a huge crossover, but one nonetheless). Now that BAFTA is doing this weird half jury shit, I'd argue now that AACTA (who still have nominating procedures similar to AMPAS) is probably now the more reliable precursor to pay attention to, if you want to know how people who work at a high level in the industry are likely be voting for the Oscars. AACTA are the only body that nominated Penelope Cruz in Best Actress as well, which is telling. Voters just liked Dench more. She's the more familiar face, and she probably felt like more of a "supporting" performance, wheras some might argue that Balfe could be borderline lead, but was stuffed into supporting because it's less competitive.

I don't get the outrage over this. Who cares. It's the Oscars. It happens. Certainly not been the first time.

Although I'm truly shocked by the Bafle miss, the Dench nomination itself doesn't surprise me. She's a legend and an Oscar favorite playing the sweet/funny/wise granny role. It's very easy to imagine that she stole the voters' hearts. It's as simple as that. They love these 'aged matriarch' roles.
And if I were to add a personal touch to this...she's just head and shoulders above everyone else in the movie acting-wise. I thought she made quite an impression despite her brief screen time. Plus Branagh does give her the crucial scene/shot of the film. To me she's the best thing about that movie so I'm actually rather happy for her.

A couple of things. I think largely because of vote-splitting between the lead and supporting categories, and Dench being a legendary figure. If June Squibb or something were playing Dench's character, I think Balfe would have gotten in. Dench was good, Balfe and Hinds were better. Jude Hill was also better than Dench, and Dornan pretty much equal.

what's surprising is that they both didn't get in. Dench was always better in Belfast than people have been giving her credit for and [huge spoiler] she gets the emotional ending when they all leave her behind and she's left with no one behind that glass door and the caption reads "for those who stayed" and the voters were crying their eyes out. That's why she got in. Why Balfe got left out I have no earthly idea. The industry hates her. Fucking monsters.

Ferrari and Belfast. It can take a while for the film industry to warm up to someone. Look at K-Stew. You hustle long enough, and you can make it eventually unless you're Donald Sutherland. Into the Wild, Still Alice, etc. Balfe needs to move on from Outlander.

I am not mad that Dench got nominated as I liked her in Belfast too and the Academy records she established as an 87 year-old actress whose first nomination came at the age of 63 are pretty fucking awesome, but I still will forever be baffled by anyone who voted for her in favour of Balfe after having seen Belfast.
Though it is just as likely that they never bothered to see the film and namechecked Judi Dench.

Still, five seasons of Outlander with just a handful of Globe nods for best actress isn't a cute look.

Coat tails, last scene, known quantity. Her last scene is probably what sealed the deal.

Probably more dumbasses in SAG who watch Outlander.
I thought Dench was tremendous in this movie, and I haven't really liked her in anything since 2006, so was all ready to hate her. I thought that scene with the kid on the bus was maybe the highlight of the whole movie.

I just hate that she was in it when we have Fionnula Flanagan and Brenda Fricker still in the world.

I guess that Dench is Old, maybe is her last nom, and they want to nominated her after being a Razzie Darling for a while. It's not cool of being remembered for her role, memes and jokes as an OLD CAT.- Also the Academy have seen Catriona Balfe as a TV actress star of a horny Romantic Nouvelle.-

Agreed on that, but then it was directed by the least Irish Irishman since Morgan Freeman in Shawshank, so what should anyone have expected? It's been a quarter of a century and I'm still trying to wrap my head around how he made some of his casting decisions in Hamlet.

Probably because it was one of the last chances to show love for an Academy darling and veteran.
I thought she was the MVP actually. Her scene on the bus with Buddy and the final scene were my favourites of the whole movie.
