Scarlett Johansson would never make it, because nobody would have thought of her performance as the movie. And it would NEED to be the first and EXTREMELY DOMINANT thing that people spoke of when discussing the film. If we had a film that could be DEFINED by an actor's commitment to the role in a similar way Andy Serkis's work as Gollum or Caesar, it could work... but even those were stuck in well-made movies in which he wasn't the 100% sole reason to watch.

It's possible, but very unlikely. It'd have to be truly transcendent, like beyond Robin Williams as the genie crossed with Irons/Jones as Scar/Mufasa. The general reaction would have to be "Holy shit! We've never seen anything like this!" I didn't get the Scarlett buzz at all. Effing Cooper as Rocket Raccoon is far more impressive.
