Lets mark down Kodi Smit-McPhee and Troy Kotsur as our safe picks. I know crazy things happen in this category all the time, but who fills up the last three spots?
The strongest contenders:
Ciaran Hinds - Nominated for the Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA, and SAG Ensemble. Won the NBR Best Supporting Actor trophy.
Jamie Dornan - Nominated for the Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Ensemble.
Jared Leto - Nominated for the Critics Choice and 2 SAG nominations.
Ben Affleck - Nominated for the Globe and SAG.
Bradley Cooper - Nominated for SAG.
The wildcards:
Mike Faist, Woody Norman, Jesse Plemons - BAFTA nomination
J.K Simmons - Critics Choice
Vincent Lindon - LA Film Critics win
Anders Danielson Lie - National Society of Film Critics win
Jon Bernthal - SAG Ensemble nomination.

I consider Hinds safe. Predicting last two spots to be Cooper and Leto, how boring.  Pulling for Affleck or Simmons or Faist or Plemons to get in just to shake things up. Leto should be getting a Razzie not an Oscar nomination. |

Leto should be getting a Razzie not an Oscar nomination. I feel that Academy is going to throw at least one curveball in this category given how dead it has been. That's why I voted for Faist even though I'm not completely confident. |

Yeah, Hinds, Cooper and Leto. Plemons at #6. Brother Fease Are you still not predicting Cooper??? Sadly, I am not. Mine are Kodi, Troy, Ciaran, Jamie, and Jared. Cooper only got 1 out of the 4 major best supporting actor nominations. If he just got the Globe or Critics Choice nomination, he would have been in my top 5. Quite frankly, the last two spots for me are extremely tricky. I could even see Affleck sneaking in.
Here is my logic: Hinds won NBR and got nominated for 3 out of the 4 major precursors. Dornan hasn't been won anything major for the performance, but I feel that Belfast is a strong best picture contender and he has a significant role as the Dad. Leto is someone who'll probably get both the Razzie and the Oscar nod. Think Glenn Close. It's one of those go all out type of role, and understands the tone of the film.

Once again, relying too much on dry precursor data. The Academy love Cooper, Licorice Pizza is coming on STRONG, and Hinds is taking all the wind out of Jamie's sails. If you want to look at precursors, I'd argue that Cooper getting SAG is way more telling than Dornan getting GG and BFCA. At least SAG is actually an industry award. |
