If you had the capacity to guarantee three longshots to actually get Oscar nods this year, and for three safe bets to get snubbed, what are your picks?
LONGSHOTS: 1. Julia Ducournau - Directing 2. Nicolas Cage - Actor 3. Kathryn Hunter - Supporting Actress
SNUBS: 1. Kirsten Dunst - Supporting Actress (she's massively overdue but I am not a fan of this performance in the least) 2. Aaron Sorkin - Original Screenplay 3. Don't Look Up - Editing

Mike Faist In the Heights The Last Duel Affleck in The Last Duel Emilia Jones

I don’t like doing snubs but it’s not as fun to take something away but I’ll do some long shots. Mike Faist In the Heights The Last Duel Affleck in The Last Duel Emilia JonesI would be thrilled if the latter three had gotten any amount of attention. Jones is still technically possible (I did read an interesting write-up somewhere that pitched that she was Top 2 with Gaga in Best Actress at BAFTA rather than Haim or Scanlan, and while I'm not 100% sold on it, there was logic to it), but I hate that The Last Duel has been paid dust this whole season.

it's so depressing realizing that DLU missing for editing and Sorkin missing for screenplay would qualify as snubs

Long shots: 1. Jodie Comer, The Last Duel - As much as I want Lady Gaga to win just for the chaos if nothing else, it’s a shame that Comer has been paid dust. If it wasn’t going to be Stewart, she should be the one winning and nominated everywhere,
2. Nicolas Cage, Pig - I hope there’s a good surprise for that final spot in Best Actor.
3. “So May We Start”, Annette - I was pleasantly shocked when it made the long list, but unfortunately I don’t see it being nominated.
Snubs: 1. Don’t Look Up, Editing - At least I’ll be able to the inevitable meme like with the Bohemian Rhapsody editing meme.
2. Aaron Sorkin, Original Screenplay - Justice for Judy Holliday.
3. “Somehow You Do,” Four Good Days - I’m not against schmaltz and sap and would have even gave Diane Warren a win at least once, but enough is enough. Until she writes another classic like “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us” and actually has a chance to win, please stop nominating for every crappy song she writes.

Snubs:Nicole Kidman - BA - BtR is not one of the 10 best female performances this year.....I'm not even sure where it lands tbh. Nobody thinks she "became" Lucy - and she may win - maybe is likely to win even. GTFO - she's also the height of our prediction hypocrisy - Glenn Close (twice as many acting nods as Kidman btw) - didn't "deserve" a career win (yes, she did btw) when she had 0 - but Kidman deserves to beat the potential best actress field in a long time for her 2nd for what is essentially also a career win. Yeah, ok, makes perfect sense. DLU - BP - Think I rated it a 5 or a 5.5 or something.......shrug Aaron Sorkin - Original Screenplay - BtR - Not only is the screenplay part of the problem - HE is almost always the problem himself - these days. Sorkin is a more acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter than David Mamet, Robert Towne and Paul Schrader .......wrap your head around that - and those guys wrote Chinatown, Taxi Driver and The Verdict......and he's more acclaimed than ALL of them combined. Enough already. Long Shots:Simon Rex - Red Rocket - BA- My number 2 male performance of the year - a future cult classic film and role. He's ahead to me of Phoenix (3rd), Washington / Smith (4 and 5 about equal), Garfield (not in my top 5) and only behind Cumby. Cate Blanchett - Nightmare Alley - BSA - The movie gets good (or better) when she enters it about an hour in......she makes the lead actor better when they share the screen........I will remember scenes in the movie just of her sitting and smoking or gazing and passive and ............when she's not passive - she's electric. Nightmare Alley - Adapted Screenplay - Great and complex script, all the way through even when as a movie it doesn't fully click (the 1st hour). This script sticks close to the book narratively but pulls the themes out in a complicated way and the movie does not stick to the novel visually - a lot of thought went into how to USE the script too - much like TPoTD. Also this script slightly tweaks the ending of the (even better) novel AND the fine 1947 movie ending too in a way that seems true to them - yet singular. Neat trick........
