This is my 12th major Oscar contender best picture review. I put this one off for a while because it wasn't getting any awards attention outside of picture and actor. But recently, we saw the picture getting a PGA, SAG Best Actor, WGA, and ACE nominations.
AWARDS ATTENTION
Best Picture - AFI + Globe Comedy/Musical + Critics Choice + PGA Best Actor - Won the Globe for Comedy/Musical. Nominated at Critics Choice and SAG. Best Adapted Screenplay - WGA nominee Best Film Editing - ACE nominee Best Sound - MPSE nominee.
That's five categories. The Satellite awards nominated Lin-Manuel Miranda for Best Director, Robin de Jesús for Best Supporting Actor, and Alice Brooks for Best Cinematography. I'll add those three to the list.
Does this film get anything beyond Actor and Picture?

totally confident in Picture and Actor, less so in sound which seems to be pretty competitive with MPSE spreading the love like crazy all over the Oscar shortlist. Everything feels in play there. Could also see it get editing if WSS gets snubbed again and Adapted Screenplay is totally possible too but rn I'm not predicting either.
No director, no de Jesus, no cinematography

I'd be so happy if De Jesus got in because he's been underrated all season and he's better than half of the projected nominees, but yeah, I don't think he will.

I used to have this stat somewhere that broke out several different nomination scenarios but I am pretty sure it's significantly less frequent that a film get nodded only for Best Actor and Picture - I think that's pretty rare and am drawing a blank on it happening (?).
Which is just how major Garfield is that it's even a possiblity.....and that he drags his film without a co-star (imo) or a screenplay nod (imo)
...........and Garfield to me clearly has cinched the 3rd slot for BA and is 9 or 10 for BP at the moment - I can see it getting BA, BP, Sound.

This one seems tough to me. Garfield is basically a lock but I can see a scenario in which he's the lone nominee for this. But at this point I'm predicting two nominations for it: Actor and Picture.
Although it can squeeze in Sound and also in Editing which is quite showy actually. Wouldn't make too much sense for it to get an Editing nomination over WSS but strange things do happen at the Oscars so...

Picture, Best Actor definitiely. Sound & Editing perhaps, Lin-Man would be an outrageously pleasant upset if to happen! |
