Regardless of what else happened today this kind of re-establishes the current top 5.

These are firmly Top 5. The Directing branch always has an ace up their sleeves though, and Branagh feels like a sitting duck among them, with Hamaguchi and Coen ready to claim that spot.

Props Brother Fease with the 5/5 predix. Love seeing PTA. Don't love Branagh and Vill over Coen, Ridley, Del Toro, etc.

But Coen has no wins anywhere does he or for his film either? I mean TToM had an awful day when it looked just yesterday like it could have a big one - I still think it's alive for a BP nod - something will muck up the PGA top 10 - and maybe TToM will overperform a bit on Oscar morning - but Coen has got to be behind GdT tbh.....at least.........but these 5 DGA look awfully solid

TToM will be a priority screener for this branch.
That said, I'd put him behind Hamaguchi, who at least got critics trifecta notices.

At the end of the day its probably just Washington, Delbonnel, and Production Design for TTOM on Oscar morning. They've been the most consistently nominated aspects of the film this awards season.

I think this is our Oscar five. Coen or Hamaguchi (PLEASE) could sub out Branagh, but I doubt it.

the bizarre ACE snub aside, WSS is still in good shape I agree. Globe Win + Guild nominations for DGA and PGA makes it a top 5 contender. Currently I have WSS as my #4. Belfast, Dog and Dune crack my top 3.

I think this is our Oscar five. Coen or Hamaguchi (PLEASE) could sub out Branagh, but I doubt it. I really don't get where all of this Hamaguchi support is coming from. I know Drive My Car is a big critical favorite and I know that the Academy's been predisposed to nominating an international director lately, but citing established names as Vinterberg, Bong and even Pawlikowski and expecting that Hamaguchi will automatically follow suit just because his film is the perceived international feature frontrunner does feel a bit specious to me. Plus there are just so many major names fighting for dominance as well that I find it hard to think that any of the DGA five are that vulnerable now. Anderson, who was arguably the most snubbable due to his somewhat spotty history with the guild, got in. Branagh could wind up getting McDonagh/Farrelly/Sorkin'd, but there is a more visual flair to Belfast than any of those guys brought to their films. Campion's the frontrunner, Villeneuve the closest challenger (there's a lot I want to talk about in regards to Dune, the Oscars, and what the expectations are for the sequel as far as awards go), and Spielberg is Spielberg -- actually, I would say at this stage, it's actually Spielberg who is most vulnerable of the five due to his film missing lay-up guilds like ACE and ASC, whereas the other films hit pretty much everywhere they needed to or were expected. But I just see everyone on Film Twitter and pundits talking about "who will Hamaguchi replace at the Oscars," and I just don't see it happening. But hey, I ate a fair bit of crow today on Ridley, so what do I know?

DGA made some good choices today. In the frenzy over the main category I forgot to notice that Emma Seligman and Michael Sarnoski were both nominated!

I think this is our Oscar five. Coen or Hamaguchi (PLEASE) could sub out Branagh, but I doubt it. Actually, I am fully expecting to see Hamaguchi get an Oscar Best Director nomination. In fact, I would be shocked, if he didn't. In the last 3 seasons, they have nominated at least one non-English speaking film. DMC is the type of movie the Director's branch would go gaga over.

PTA and Campion ought to be removed from the lineup. Lousy films.

I'm with Stephen, I think Hamaguchi is like 8th at best. I'll start taking him more seriously if he gets the BAFTA nom like Pawel and Thomas did.

I don’t think Branagh is the vulnerable one no matter how much the internet wants him to be but it would be so crazy if after this year he would have 7 Oscar nominations and never in the same category twice.
He needs to make an animated movie and a documentary next just to see how far this can go.
