Another sad loss for cinema. I absolutely loved him in The Flight of the Phoenix.
Hardy Krüger was a good man personally as well, fighting hard against right-wing extremism. I don't know how well-known this is. But his parents wanted young Hardy to grow up in the spirit of nationalsocialism, but he early on saw the diabolic side of this and helped jews to flee the country. When he was a 16-year old soldier, he didn't want to fight against Americans and was actually sentenced to death. But an officer had pity with him and made Hardy his runner. Hardy deserted and could flee as well, later becoming a famous actor and would continue to fight against right-wing extremism his whole life.
RIP

What a talented actor. I need to see more his stuff but I'll never forget his turn as the proud engineer in Flight of the Phoenix, his arrogance immediately isolating him from his companions but pushing on all the same, staunchly self-possessed. And in the end he turns out to be right--but the whole time he knows it or makes you believe that he knows it, and that makes him "unlikeable" in a sense, clearly meant to be an antagonistic presence in the first two acts, but the movie subverts that and you end up admiring him. I'll never forgive AMPAS for snubbing him RIP Herr Dorfmann

I'll never forgive AMPAS for snubbing him Kruger openly refused the Golden Globe nomination he got that year for it, so I'm pretty sure he was fine with an Oscar snub. It doesn't make it better, though.
