On January 21st, the American Cinema Editors will release their nominees. Just a quick little reminder: only ten films have won best picture without a film editing nomination. Spotlight is the only modern day film to win Best Picture without an ACE nomination. Before that it was Driving Miss Daisy in 1989.
Here are your main contenders for both DRAMA and COMEDY/MUSICAL
DRAMA Belfast - Úna Ní Dhonghaíle
Dune - Joe Walker
The Power of the Dog -Peter Sciberras
All three scored Critics Choice and Globe nominations for Best Picture and Editing nods at the Critics Choice awards.
CODA, King Richard, Nightmare Alley, and The Tragedy of Macbeth scored at least one of the following nominations: AFI, Globe, or Critics Choice Best Picture nominations. House of Gucci got nominated for SAG Ensemble.
COMEDY/MUSICAL
Licorice Pizza - Andy Jurgensen West Side Story - Sarah Broshar and Michael Kahn
Both donned Critics Choice and Globe nominations for Best Picture and Editing nods at the Critics Choice awards.
Cyrano was nominated for Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes. Don't Look Up and Tick tick...Boom! received Globe, Critics Choice, and AFI Best Picture nominations. Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar, The French Dispatch, and Free Guy got a Best Comedy nomination at the Critics Choice awards.
I included all of the films receiving major awards consideration at the Globes and SAG awards.

yeah I was stuck on that 5th slot for comedy. On one hand there's Cruella and In the Heights (both GG nominees) which have flashy editing, and on the other there's Cyrano which doesn't have much buzz but is going to be fresher on the minds of voters who've seen screeners. But there's no precedent for any of them and none are in the conversation. Whoever it turns out to be, they aren't getting an Oscar nom. |

yeah I was stuck on that 5th slot for comedy. On one hand there's Cruella and In the Heights (both GG nominees) which have flashy editing, and on the other there's Cyrano which doesn't have much buzz but is going to be fresher on the minds of voters who've seen screeners. But there's no precedent for any of them and none are in the conversation. Whoever it turns out to be, they aren't getting an Oscar nom. I do like the fact they split the categories into Drama and Comedy/Musical. It broadens recognition for film that involve humor and putting together musical numbers. I probably should have included Free Guy and the French Dispatch, but I think the choices here are doable. |

It turns out that West Side Story and In the Heights are eligible in the Drama category. That completely changes our picks.
I am going with ACE DRAMA for Belfast, The Power of the Dog, West Side Story, Dune, and Nightmare Alley. ACE COMEDY/MUSICAL, I am going with Cruella, Don't Look Up, French Dispatch, Licorice Pizza, and TTB!.
