What do you think is gonna happen in this important category this year?
So far I'm guessing:
- Belfast - West Side Story - Dune - Don't Look Up - Licorice Pizza
Belfast is probably our frontrunner so it's in. I don't think it's that flashy or anything but it's short, tight and the photoalbum feeling of it will probably help it here.
WSS is, on the other hand, super flashy. Big robust musical sequences, always lively and energetic. Editing is a big part of the musicality of the film too. Michael Kahn is frigging 91. I really hope he gets nominated, along with Sarah Broshar who'll probably take the mantle of the Spielberg Editor in the future.
Dune also feels quite safe - a big blockbuster which is likely Top 5 is a good bet.
I think McKay's and Corwin's antics will once again get in - all of them random cutaways are once again used very actively. I think this is a Jojo Rabbit kinda situation - comedic but partially serious BP nominee that didn't impress the critics but appealed to the industry.
The fifth spot is tougher. I'm going with Pizza for now but I dunno...There's of course The Power of the Dog but I'm getting Roma vibes from it - a slower, 'artier' BP nominee that misses. Maybe King Richard can somehow do it with the sports scenes (I haven't seen it yet so I dunno how intense and frequent those are in the movie)? Or perhaps tick, tick...BOOM! which has a lot of showy editing in it.
What are your predictions?

West Side Story Belfast Dune Don't Look Up Tick Tick Boom
Not feeling Pizza or Power of the Dog here, as both films felt like they had flow problems, more from the writing than the editing, but still.

thanks for reminding me that Jojo Rabbit got an editing nom same as yours with Power of the Dog instead of Don't Look Up. Other than those the spoilers are Tick Tick Boom, King Richard and Being the Ricardos with its flashy editing and convoluted structure. I think Pizza is more vulnerable than Power.

What do you think is gonna happen in this important category this year? What are your predictions? Pretty pivotal Oscar nomination. Only 10 films have won Best Picture without an editing nomination. Birdman (2014), Ordinary People (1980), Annie Hall (1977) and Godfather Part 2 (1974) were "recent' exceptions.
So far mine are: Belfast, Dune, Licorice Pizza, King Richard, and West Side Story.

I still remember thinking Green Book missing director was a bigger deal than Roma missing editing. I’ll go with: Belfast Don’t Look Up Dune The Power of the Dog (I think it can win BP although I’m predicting Belfast to win, so I think it will be nominated here.) West Side Story
