Spiderman blew the doors off the box office, earning a massive $50 million in Thursday previews. The Sony Pictures release is on pace to pull in $150 million over its opening weekend.
Not surprising in the slightest but still absolutely insane numbers.

Damn, I wanted to make this thread, lol. Anyway incredible for New Way Home. Should be on its way to at least topping or at least making as much as The Force Awakens opening weekend.

I feel for you I was like, shit, therealcomicman117 has been keeping these box office threads going and now that a film is finally going to explode at the Box Office at pre-Pandemic blockbuster levels, I thought you'd do the honors. Ah well!

Now we need a cross-event Spider-Man film where he goes against Jared Leto's character from House of Gucci.

Yikes for Nightmare Alley. Unfortunately Spider-Man's huge success this weekend will bolster the argument that the only movies deserving of theatrical releases in the streaming age of viewing habits are comic book films with adult dramas not doing well this Oscar season. If West Side Story with Spielberg's name attached didn't bring out people to see it. Curious to see how The Matrix Resurrections performs next week.

The Matrix Resurrections should probably do at least 40m I'd reckon, that seems to be the average for known IP's that aren't Marvel. Unfortunately Nightmare Alley's incoming "failure" does make me very very depressed. Doubt will ever see box office weekends like this one again for example, where every movie is sold to a different demographic, and have PTA's of over 5,000. www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2007W07/?ref_=bo_rl_table_1

Honestly, I think a lot of these esteemed auteurs are going to be doubling down on their Marvel hate, after looking at the insane numbers for No Way Home, while things like West Side Story , Nightmare Alley etc, are hardcore flopping.
I think maybe after the lacklustre response to The Eternals, people might have thought Marvel's grip on the industry and audiences was loosening, but it's clearly as strong as ever.

I think maybe after the lacklustre response to The Eternals, people might have thought Marvel's grip on the industry and audiences was loosening, but it's clearly as strong as ever. Especially after months of articles/podcasts saying theaters are dying and prestige films not doing well at the box/office. Then here comes Spider-Man blowing the roof off. Several auteurs have expressed their disdain for them, but I think it’s cool that some..like Paul Thomas Anderson and Spike Lee enjoy them.

Aaaaaaand.....like clockwork, James Cameron manages to get in a bit of Marvel bashing, to prop up Villeneuve's Dune . This is getting tragic now. These great filmmakers all come across so petty and envious now:

Well Martin Scorsese, Denis Villeneuve and Ridley Scott for starters ScorseseEven in that 9 second clip, Marty is clearly showing zero enthusiasm for Spider-Man, but trying to be supportive of a fellow auteur in Raimi. Before Marvel started running shit, these auteurs could all tolerate Superhero movies. Hell, James Cameron was trying to develop his own Spider-Man movie for years. Now he'd probably say he has no interest in making a Spidey film.

Question to the US folks - is everyone allowed in your theatres at the moment? Or do they have to have proof of vaccination or something? Because while I certainly expected Spidey to be huge, I didn't quite foresee it challenging the all-time records

Considering how James Cameron's Spider-Man treatment was pretty fucking awful, maybe he should sit this one out.

Wish Leo had used his box office superpowers on Nightmare Alley (and Licorice Pizza) instead of doing a streaming movie that is not looking like it will be that good anyway.
As with Last Duel I think this is the case of another A-lister (Cooper) getting exposed. Don't know how you can claim he can "open a movie" after this.
