Also.... is this the third or so time Licorice Pizza has been loved (Pic, Director, Ensemble) but no Alana Haim. I thought she'd be making more critics appearances..... that goes for Rachel Zegler too.....

This feels like the eventual Oscar five for Best Actress, but if there's a category that's ripe to be a shocker come nomination morning, it's that one.

Uncut Gems at least had Sandler winning a huge chunk of the critics' prizes. Cage doesn't have the luxury of being the critical favorite with Cumberbatch sucking up so much of the oxygen there. And let's be real: Sandler missed out on industry prizes because voters weren't willing to take him seriously enough as a contender because of his career (some voters actually said as much). Cage has a lot of the same drawbacks in that I feel a lot of his cash-grab flicks might be held against him, although he at least is an Oscar-winning actor.

Cage and Neon are putting in the work on the circuit, and I think there's certainly more love for him and the film than expected, but he missed the Indie Spirit and the Globe nod (the former of which isn't quite as bad because they went off the beaten track for most of their acting nominees, and I don't see any of the ones who did get nominated actually making a strong run at the Oscar nod; the latter is more troubling, but it depends on whether you feel the Globes actually matter this year). But he needs SAG and BAFTA, and I just struggle to see him getting in with those bodies. But he's not dead yet, and all it takes is Neon to throw all their weight behind him now.
