Another win for Cumberbatch. I don’t think he’s as strong as Hopkins, but I don’t know if Smith is as strong as Boseman either.
Smith did win NBR and was allegedly the runner up at NYFCC, but just reading some of my mutuals’ reactions to King Richard, it just seems sort of weird I guess because most of them have said that he’s fine, but he’s not even one of the top 3 performances from it. He’s popular, but I wouldn’t say he’s due.
Before King Richard opened I thought it was basically a done deal that Smith would just sweep most of the Industry awards and while I know most everything has underperformed, I’m not really seeing the path for Smith since it’s not a huge hit and the critics, at least so far, haven’t been overwhelmingly for him either. Maybe I’m just at the point already where I’m trying to create some doubt where none exists, but I do think there’s slightly more chance still not a lot but I had it at zero chance before that Cumberbatch wins BAFTA and then the Oscar.

Another mention for LP. It is the common denominator.

He's a problem for Smith because he's going to win a lot more of these critics awards - it's a perfect critics performance in virtuosity and arc -I've seen Smith and Washington - Cumberbatch is better on merit than both of them.........and he's going to win BAFTA I'm pretty sure which gives him a path to a win (and gives Washington a path to a win slightly once Smith isn't a lock). I think Smith does win the Globe (whatever) and maybe SAG ........and could still hold on - he's still #1 to me - but he needs somebody to stop the Cumby train - or at least to win both Globe & SAG. The other thing is if Cumby gains favor as the acting winner - TPoTD - which is a better film than Licorice Pizza AND a more likely winner - the Licorice Pizza train is not legit to me - then becomes arguable favorite in Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay........and it will contend for PGA now seems like it has a path thanks to critics establishing that path for them.....at one time that didn't seem the case

Damn Netflix won the 9 major categories.
Delighted by Pig in BP!
Also happy to see Thompson and Negga there.

I think they'll prefer LP by A LOT. It's a Hollywood movie (and not "out there" like OUTAIH). And I don't see previous winner Campion beating the looong overdue PTA in Screenplay. Branagh maaaaaaybe, but not Campion.

Branagh maaaaaaybe, but not Campion. ^ Two different categories there - TPoTD is adapted and LP is original - I could see both winning there but that's all I see LP winning possibly I think people on here are really overrating LP in a lot of these categories for wins .......I think it's hurt by missing acting nods - I stll think Haim is a stretch though I thought she was adorable and has picked up some critic wins but I still don't have her top 5 and I don't care how many critics wins she gets tbh it will still be hard for her to crack the top 5................. but TPoTD is flat out getting 3 Oscar acting nods for sure.
