The thing that makes Brokeback Mountain work as well as it does is the inimitable chemistry its two leads have. That's why I always find exercises in hypothetically recasting romance-driven films to be far too speculative: no matter how good an actor is, if they don't have chemistry with their co-star, the story's not going to work.
It would've been interesting, though.

Heard it claimed on the internet that Lee wanted to cast Damon and Affleck but they turned it down as well.
You've got to think Hartnett would have a totally different career today if he'd done it and pulled it off.

Just imagine if he had critical darling Brokeback Mountain and box office juggernaut Batman Begins in the same year?!?!

Man, Hartnett's career is so weird. He was actually growing as an actor just as he flamed out of mainstream films. His work in August and Resurrecting the Champ was more than solid. I legit think he's better in those 2 films than Pattinson's underrated early work pre-Good Time.

Anything would have been better than Heath Ledger. I think that Phoenix and Hartnett both would have been great.

I thought it was Gus Van Sant in the early stages that wanted Damon before Lee was on board? Been so long, I forgot.

Can you imagine how many times Damon would have opened his mouth and ruined the film's Oscar chances? He didn't do that back then, though. In fact one of his big strengths used to be being one of those celebrities who always "said the right things". I think nowdays he's just been famous for so long he's developed an ego and thinks he can blurt out whatever he wants. Maybe so, just know I've read that they were considered for the main duo which is weird to think about given their real life friendship.

Josh Hartnett's career did turn out really weird. I've heard about really promising stuff he's turned down but he'd say yes to things like Wicker Park or Lucky Number Slevin.
