Would you say this instance of against-type casting worked?

My favorite Nicole Kidman performance How do you feel about the film itself? I definitely think Ryan's performance is the only thing that truly works about it.

Oh honey, let's be honest, the only thing that truly works about it was Mark Ruffalo's penis. That's the only why anyone watched it.

Huge fan of its scuzzy, grimy atmosphere and aesthetic, and I find it such a fascinating exploration of sexuality and sexual power dynamics.

Saw this earlier this year but would like to revisit down the line. This was easily my favorite Meg Ryan performance (but that's not saying a lot). There's definitely a lot of Kidman in that performance but I still think Meg does it better and was a refreshing out of her comfort zone move. The movie was really quite messy especially in the first two acts but I found the third act strong. Brave performances from the main trio.
Jennifer Jason Leigh's death was done well and it's rare in these kind of films we see characters react like actual human beings like Ryan does. I also really liked the killer's reveal and climax.

I found her excellent. Shame that it didn't work out for her career-wise. I'd like to see her exploring more of such different kinds of roles in this stage of her career. Ruffalo and Jennifer are strong as well.

I would still rate When Harry Met Sally and When a Man Loves a Woman higher, but yes, it's certainly her most interesting and daring performance.

Well, my favorite thing about it was Mark Ruffalo. I was in love. But about Meg Ryan, I thought she was quite good in it. She got a lot of vitriol for it that I did not agree with at all. If you watch the film, it has an uncomfortable feel throughout. Casting an actress who audiences wouldn't be comfortable with or accustomed to seeing in that type of part works in an interesting way.

Agreed. Granted, my memories of the time are a little hazy, but wasn't this was right after her "good girl" image had been tarnished due to her affair with Russell Crowe? People just wanted a reason to shit on her.

People just wanted a reason to shit on her. Yes, her and Russell Crowe had an affair a couple of years prior and her being one of America's sweethearts, it was "how dare she?" Dennis Quaid was unfaithful too, btw. She also did this awkward interview below while promoting this movie with this obnoxiously condescending, blowhard Michael Parkinson. So check the temperature around her at that time.

I like her a lot in this film, which as a whole deserves to revisited and re-evaluated (and probaly has to some extent).

Don't remember well, I found the movie extremely boring, I'm not even remember the sex scenes, that was the whole plot of the movie, seing Girl Next Door Ryan naked.-
I prefer killing me softly with Heather Graham.-

Watched this today and thought that Ryan was awesome. It's so strange that she never got proper awards attention despite a couple of strong bids. The movie just came out at the wrong time - in this day and age it'd be among the most critically acclaimed films of the year and Ryan would be snatching nominations left and right. She was excellent. The movie was good too (kind of messy but often intriguingly so) but deeply unpleasant. Wanted to take a bleach bath after it.

Watched this for the first time the other day also. Though Ryan was indeed quite excellent day I think the Kidman comparisons are apt. Movie was a mixed bag for me though.
