yeah this is kurzweil-type stuff that's been predicted for a while. hoping it comes to reality soon - practical immortality by 2040 or so would be incredible.

I'm all for extreme life extension, but not sure I would want to become completely machine like many of the transhumanists promote as the only true way to achieve immortality.

Outside the goes wrong because it does not work as well as expected worry, there is also the gap it could create between the rich getting those upgrade and the others that are a bit worrisome.

I'm all for extreme life extension, but not sure I would want to become completely machine like many of the transhumanists promote as the only true way to achieve immortality. i would expect lifespans are projected to increase aside from any singularity-type stuff so you could probably bet on living longer anyways without any sort of fused consciousness or anything

So the solution is prohibit anyone from getting the upgrades? At first only the rich were able to own phones, now virtually everyone in the US does.

So the solution is prohibit anyone from getting the upgrades? At first only the rich were able to own phones, now virtually everyone in the US does. There is no magic solution, just being worry. Phone got some measure put in place (in some market phone company got exclusivity contract in rich concentrated market if they agreed to develop and operate phone system in poorer rural one for example). But the gap between having much more intelligence for decades could lead to a much different gap than having phones and most of all could become exponential (not that it is necessarily something that would end up being a bad thing, but possibly).
