This is a huge success for her - just one review but there's a ton of these type. Killing Eve star Jodie Comer absolutely storms the West End in this one-woman show, playing a barrister specialising in sexual assault cases who is herself then raped. Her working-class character Tessa Ensler starts off as an exuberant ball of energy, swaggering and shimmying around a set lined with legal files, glorying in her ability to navigate the hierarchy and the technical nuances of law. www.standard.co.uk/culture/theatre/prima-facie-review-jodie-comer-harold-pinter-theatre-b996782.html

Trailer for anyone interested. Quite a triumph for the 29y/o Comer. The word isn't just positive but lots of people describing the overwhelming awe of her perf, stuff like this:
@juliamc1 Just had the HONOUR of watching Jodie Comer in Prima Facie. I’ve seen some of the greats on stage over the years - Patrick Stewart, Emma Thompson, David Tennant, etc - and let me tell you NONE of them had the audience in the palm of their hand quite like that.

This is an amazing performance and I didn't really care that much for The Last Duel - I preferred House of Gucci - yeah, I said it ........but this performance is a force of nature - and the play has preachy / clunky parts - that she makes seem ok because of how she plays it. This is not just tremendous work - it is masterful in where it is set by her - the actor level - and how it is pitched so you follow it without getting worn out - A LOT of thought went into the energy she brings way up ..........and way down ......... if you live in the US you can see this on Broadway next year - and of course you can see this National Theatre Live Production if a local theater has it. Essential viewing

The Playbill for this tour de force - so good that it rivals Tar for the best actng in 2022 (2023 US) - and far beyond just 2022 / 2023 too - and so good pacinoyes is excusing the unnecessary use of the word "patriarchial" in the synopsis yanno? My tix are for end of month in April (I saw the National Theatre film of it also) - anybody else going? Prima Facie Playbill - Opening Night Prima Facie
BROADWAYORIGINAL JOHN GOLDEN THEATRE 252 W. 45TH ST., NEW YORK, NY Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve,” Free Guy) will make her highly anticipated Broadway debut in the US premiere of Prima Facie, a new play by Suzie Miller, for a strictly limited 10-week engagement.
SYNOPSIS: Tessa is a thoroughbred. A young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game; prosecuting; cross examining and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge.

Just got tickets to see this at the end of May when I’ll be in NYC. Would have gotten them earlier, but had to wait to see what my schedule would be like at the conference I’ll be in town for... so glad I can fit it in. Will be going a few days before seeing A Doll’s House too!

To those who have seen it: how easily could this be translated as an adaptation to film? I know it's a one-(wo)man show, but do we think there would be a way to finesse it into a suitable adaptation that isn't confined to the stage? If so, who would be the best person to handle it?

It's extremely difficult to imagine it, but... maybe Pablo Larraín or Florian Zeller? Zeller did a fantastic job with turning The Father into something incredibly cinematic and playing around with the conventions of the stage (i.e. the shifting production design), and I would be interested to see him do something that isn't based on his own source material. Larraín is great with his leading ladies and Comer feels like a great fit for him, so I'd be open to that as well.

I'd be shocked if this could be filmed in a way that preserves her performance........the actual play is merely ok - and if she loses the Tony - which is possible, but I still doubt it - it will be because it's seen as a stunt......but the stunt aspect in the theater works smashingly well .......in film where you can just edit it, do retakes, "enhance" the performance through so much movie trickery and it changes everything that works with her - and her body, physically - on the stage.........I don't think it would have the same allure - the allure is in the endurance aspect and how she can keep it all straight in her head - in the moment ........in fact the musical accompaniment and sound design she gets on stage is actually quite intrusive - and you want it just to be her with no enhancement ......... to film it would be to change it into Sybil or something like that........ Now having said that - I bet Sam Mendes would loooooooooooooooooooove to try to film this - he's a theater guy, he knows his way around film gimmicks (in a good way - not being snarky), his wife probably looks at this play and thinks "that could have been MY fncking Tony Award, Sam"........

Mendes was also someone who came to mind, and I think it would be fascinating to see what he could do to make a one-person show work in a cinematic fashion.

I'm going into it pretty cold, so I know nothing of what's involved in Comer's performance, but do you think it would play on film in a way that's significantly different from another one-person stage to screen adaptation like Altman's Secret Honor? It's been a long time since I've seen that one, but would you say there's a different "allure" there that still makes it effective as a film adaptation?

Secret Honor is a bit different but I'm not an artist - merely the leading Film, Pop music and Theater writer of our time - kidding, kidding........ Somewhat similar but Prima Facie is tougher because it is so rigidly presented......... Secret Honor is one character - ie he isn't acting out Kissinger and Kennedy etc - and Comer is presenting several in a way ........ Secret Honor is couched in "real life" dialog even if the dialog itself is not actual (ie those are things Nixon "could" have said) so that work resonates specifically - as a "record" - an alternate history, as a political treatise etc - outside of the (great) performance .......you can say as a feminist work Prima Facie has a reason to exist too but it isn't as singular in that way Now having said that - if they just released the National Theatre Live production of Prima Facie - she'd be at least Oscar nominated anyway .......HBO could air it and it would be an event too.....I think people may get really confused by the play itself - which like I said above is interesing but not great imo - it's quite frantic - especially at first - you could stylize it and tone it down I guess .......there's ways to improve the play.......... but all those things take you away from Comer who is the reason to see it .......tough to adapt I think.......

I've actually watched her performance last year (filmed stage performance via NT live) One of the most mindblowing performances I've ever seen. Jodie deserves all the awards for her incredible , committed , raw and hauntingly beautiful work. In my humble opinion , THE performance of the decade (I know this decade is far from being over but I don't see any other performance topping this one).

In my humble opinion , THE performance of the decade (I know this decade is far from being over but I don't see any other performance topping this one). I've seen it twice in the NT Live version and once on Broadway - and not only this ^ but I mentioned in "The Last Great Performance You've Seen" Thread - the filming of her performance actually doesn't quite fully capture how amazing she is in the live setting - especially in how she uses her body.........just as a feat of endurance it is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.......and that's just for a start.......it's kind of shocking that she doesn't get physically hurt in giving this performance multiple times per week......... It is mindboggling how she can generate that much energy, keep all that text in her head - across several characters - and arc the performance in line readings so it tells a coherent story rather than just screeching the text at you.......... It's one of the great acting feats (some might say "stunts" but whatever, shrug) - by anyone - male or female - in my lifetime............and I'm 278 years old............

the musical accompaniment and sound design she gets on stage is actually quite intrusive - and you want it just to be her with no enhancement Just saw this a couple nights ago, and I agree that the music was rather intrusive and distracting at times... mainly at the beginning and towards the end, but I didn’t find it to be as much of an issue in the middle. I too found the play to be a bit heavyhanded and preachy (at the end specifically), but Comer really is incredible. There was a lot more humor than I was expecting, which sounds weird considering the subject matter, but I suppose that’s part of what makes it not exhausting and oppressively harrowing the whole time. The way she played the character’s swagger throughout really felt like a “Blanchett-esque” performance.
