Smith does way more in his movie just as a character on the page ........and has made a lot more people a lot more money in the industry over the years....follow the money, and the formula, not the critics.....it's the Brad Pitt victory lap as far as I can see atm...... I really don't disagree, but... I'm just wondering if the Academy's membership trending more international won't benefit Cumberbatch? I mean, look at Hopkins and Boseman just last year.

SmithStewart Smit-McPhee but....... DeBose Look, I loved I'mCumbyDammit - and no one is really close to him on merit that I've seen so far in 2021 (haven't seen Dinky of the contenders)........but I'll go with my default POV: Smith does way more in his movie just as a character on the page ........and has made a lot more people a lot more money in the industry over the years....follow the money, and the formula, not the critics.....it's the Brad Pitt victory lap as far as I can see atm...... Except, unlike Joe Pesci, Cumby has never won and hasn't appeared in only 2 films in the last 2 decades.

I dreamt last night that Benedict Cumberbatch, Kristen Stewart, and Kirsten Dunst were the winners, with a tie between Ciarán Hinds and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Except, unlike Joe Pesci, Cumby has never won and hasn't appeared in only 2 films in the last 2 decades. He's also not competing with an even more acclaimed actor from the same movie playing a very famous person.
Also, Smith is not facing only former winners, most of whom won't even bother to show up to the ceremony, let alone campaign.
Plus, Pitt is a much more acclaimed actor than Smith, and actually had performances that were worthy of a nomination (although not necessarily top 5 of the year) not getting rewarded, while Smith was nominated for the only ones he had.
OUATIH was also much more of a contender than King Richard, from a more respected director.
And the money argument doesn't really work when he's facing Denzel and Cumby, both of whom are also big movie stars, the former at least as big as Smith. And that didn't work for Stallone against Mark Rylance, who barely had a movie career at that point.

Look, fellas - I said Smith was "like Brad Pitt" - but I didn't say he was exactly like Brad Pitt...... It is not the same circumstances, same film or same competition ...........but this race is between Smith and Cumby as far as I can see - the money argument most certainly works against Cumby in comparison to Smith - no one paid for Cumby's name like Smith. Denzel - unless I'm totally misreading this - is not winning (saw it, liked him a lot especially at the end) - so what does his career box office pull have to do with anything much less winning a 3rd? In fact the SDS's (Smith Derangement Syndrome) folks would be best served not by arguing Denzel's career BO pull vs. Smith's or Cumby's franchise success ......but instead arguing that King Richard is THE lowest grossing Smith movie ever..........but...........even with that: This is a real simple race - if Cumby wins BAFTA (assumed, extremely logical he does) - Smith has to win SAG and not sabotage himself with his loose canon mouth - he loses SAG he's no longer number 1, that's it - regardless of how many critics awards Cumby wins and even if Cumby wins BAFTA If Washington wins SAG (possible) he jumps back in the winning comversation imo - actually if he wins LAFC or NSFC he's a threat to win - even though I think he's 4th or (very arguably) 5th atm...... As I've already said I loved Cumby, and TpoTD is my number 3 of the year so if he's jumping over Smith - fine, with me, party at my house - he'd deserve the win on merit the way Hopkins did over Boseman - but just saying we aren't there yet.......as of December 18th I'm sticking with Big Willie Style........

Yeah I’m not really buying these arguments against Smith either. He’s clearly the current frontrunner imo but of course that could change and of course Cumberbatch or Washington are in play for the win. But some of these arguments against Smith are pretty baffling. And it’s not like he’d be my personal winner or anything or I’m even his biggest fan. I enjoy his charisma and think he can deliver the occasional elevated performance, which he did this year. While I don’t think it’s the best performance of the year, it’s hard to argue against its narrative, and how it will play with the Academy.
