Denzel in The Little Things is one of the most extreme cases of a great actor on autopilot in the last 10+ years.

I see what you did here, Scrud critized (rightly imo) Bobby D last 25 years, so you answered back citing Denzel (oh original), who btw is in competition for getting his 4th oscars nominations in 10 years, he don't really belongs on this topic who is more about a period than just for one film. And speaking about the film, Denzel looks tired and bored in The Little Things but I think it's more the character traits and an actor's choice(s) than him being truly on autopilot. There are a tons of performances given by great actors during the last 10 years who aren't even close to be as affected/concerned (and ultimately as good) as Denzel in The Little Things, calling it "one of the most extreme cases" is a big stretch.

LOL! This tit-for-tat nonsense is so silly, childish and predictable on this board by now. I don't even take it seriously. Sorry DeNiro fans for calling him the autopilot king (hardly a rare or unique observation btw). If you wanna nitpick a random Denzel performance to get back at me, knock yourself out

Matt Damon Robert DeNiro (except for The Irishman) Johnny Depp Yeah Depp was on autopilot for years before his career went to shit. Depp's last stand was Sweeney Todd. He was good in that. But wow what a downturn. Breathtaking.

Christ ! I just took a look at Bruce Willis' upcoming films... The man clearly doesn't care anymore. He's only in for the $ $ $ which is a damn shame because he's a charismatic actor who can deliver a really good performance when he puts an effort into it

Sean Connery was on autopilot almost his entire career from the '80s on. He was just so fundamentally sound and naturally charismatic that even his autopilot is pretty solid, and when he was inspired (The Untouchables, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), he was still fantastic.

Wait a minute, weight gain and autopilot performances with age? I mean, every actor wants to be Brando but he's really taking that seriously. Crowe got fat, but I don't think he's ever gone on autopilot. He had a peak period (late 90's to late 2000's) that stands up to most screen actors in history, but like 99% of actors before him, couldn't sustain that level, but still consistently did solid work, where he is clearly making an effort. From The Nice Guys to Noah to Boy Erased to The True History Of The Kelly Gang to The Loudest Voice to Man Of Steel....Crowe still consistently delivers first rate work. He also no longer gets the Primo A-list leading man scripts he got in his prime/peak, which should be accounted for. Judged by his peak/prime, he's not as great or surprising as he once was, but judged against most working actors, Crowe can still be considered an elite (character) actor. I mean Crowe was even the best thing about the ill-fated misguided Mummy reboot. I don't know if he's ever been on autopilot, as much as he's just so damn good at the acting game.

pacinoyes Jesus H. Christ ! Is Rusty really scratching his butt on that pic ? He maybe is just be pulling his pants up because he's been coasting for so long - at everything except stuffing his face - that he can't even scratch his butt convincingly Here's Fatty taking on the role of "washed up and sad has been who once was great (1991-2001)" - by eating 2 lunches at one time - a chicken sandwich and fries + a seperate order of fish and chips .........yeah, that's what you need Russ: more fries............. he ordered both at the same time because he's committed to the role.

I hate bodyshamming people but damn I definitely prefer the younger Rusty. I thought he had gained all that weight to portray Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice (his most impressive performance in a long time by the way) but I see that it's been going on for way too long.
