Maggie Smith herself says she “wasn’t really acting in those things” - referring to Downton Abbey and the films she had done of late. Indeed, the last time she truly wowed me was in 2009’s Capturing Mary - a harrowing performance worthy of the Dame’s thespian reputation. Her upcoming projects give me hope that she’ll be truly “on” again soon.
Who’s your choice?

Peter Dinklage in the last few seasons of Game of Thrones comes to mind. He looked out of it.

Well, to be fair she was only referring to Downton and the Harry Potter films, and regarding those I agree with her. Have you seen The Lady in the Van? I thought that was her last outstanding performance.

Liam Neeson for 15 + years.... ............fat-ass Russell Crowe who decided he was Marlon Brando (he wasn't) when he was only about ~ 38 and hasn't been great (or much good) since.......that's around 20 years now........keep eating Pudge (see below)........and Morgan Freeman since Invictus where he thought he got his 5th Oscar nomination which in his mind was like "that's my the gold watch!" that you get in retirement.........except he didn't retire.........he makes a lot of movies.......

Isn't the standard answer for this Robert DeNiro? (and it's closer to 30 years)
Yeah, yeah, I know some people thought he was doing something in The Irishman, but even with arguably the greatest living director helming him, he still seemed to barely raise his blood pressure in that film for long stretches of it.
His famous rival and counterpart, Al Pacino can be loud, hammy and overbearing at times, but it's hard to accuse him of being on autopilot like DeNiro is most of the time.
As mentioned, Bruce Willis is also a perfect answer.

Jennifer Lawrence in the X-men movies is the best example in the last decade or so.

Isn't the standard answer for this Robert DeNiro? (and it's closer to 30 years) No Especially if you're going to extend it all the way back to 30 years. Jennifer Lawrence in the X-men movies is the best example in the last decade or so. Lawrence is a good one. She's been coasting on her SLP persona for so long now and it remains to be seen what else she can do.

Especially if you're going to extend it all the way back to 30 years. Well, we are closing in on 2022, and I generally think DeNiro lost it after 1995, so we are nearing the 27 year mark of DeNiro being mostly "meh". So, not quite 30 years, but close enough.

Unless I missed some gem, it seems that Colin Firth has essentially settled into a bland sameness after his Oscar win. Well...fuck him anyway for betraying Woody Allen.

Firth needs the right role or director to shine, or he'll be bland. He has always been that way, long before his Oscar win. I thought he was the standout character/performance in the Kingsman franchise, for whatever that is worth (a surprisingly effective action star). And that came after his Oscar win.

This but I thought he was like that before his Oscar win as well. "A Single Man"/"The King's Speech" duo are surprising back-to-back highlights in a career full of boring and unremarkable performances.

I guess I just remember those two performances too fondly

Wait a minute, weight gain and autopilot performances with age? I mean, every actor wants to be Brando but he's really taking that seriously.

Crowe got fat, but I don't think he's ever gone on autopilot. He had a peak period (late 90's to late 2000's) that stands up to most screen actors in history, but like 99% of actors before him, couldn't sustain that level, but still consistently did solid work, where he is clearly making an effort. From The Nice Guys to Noah to Boy Erased to The True History Of The Kelly Gang to The Loudest Voice to Man Of Steel....Crowe still consistently delivers first rate work. He also no longer gets the Primo A-list leading man scripts he got in his prime/peak, which should be accounted for. Judged by his peak/prime, he's not as great or surprising as he once was, but judged against most working actors, Crowe can still be considered an elite (character) actor.
