I’ve seen a bit of high praise for Depardieu so looking for some recs of some of his better performances. I’ve seen very little tbh and mostly cheesy commercial stuff so I’ve never been too impressed.

The Return of Martin Guerre, which I think is far and away his finest work.

Danton (1983) Jean de Florette (1986) Novecento (1976) Pure Formality (1994) Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) Welcome to New York (2014) Tous les matins du monde (1991) Buffet Froid (1979) Camille Claudel (1988) The Return of Martin Guerre (1982) 36th Precinct (2004) Under the Sun of Satan (1987)
Many of his older films are worth to see. His films with Francis Veber are all fun and his collaborations with Truffaut are also strong.

I’ve seen a bit of high praise for Depardieu so looking for some recs of some of his better performances. I’ve seen very little tbh and mostly cheesy commercial stuff so I’ve never been too impressed. God-tier actor. In our GOAT poll I ranked him as the 5th or 6th best actor of all-time iirc - behind only Brando, Olivier, DePac and maybe Nicholson (?)........to me he is the one guy who reminds me of Brando without ever actually resorting to acting in any way "like Brando". From at least 1980 to the early 90s he went on an unbelievable diverse acting run which sealed his status as an all-timer. He's also hysterically funny at times too - unlike Hopkins/DDL/Washington etc. - he is not just a (mostly) deep dramatic actor (though all of those guys are great too obviously) .................... Depardieu has a whole lot of terrific comic performances just within his ascendancy / peak years (74-94). At his best he was funny, indelibly powerful, a terrific and generous co-star as a romantic lead opposite female greats ............. he was the total acting package. He's the male version of Huppert ........all of these are greatish or better and bold ones are no shit genius all-time performances - just '74-'94 - and I'm leaving stuff out too so as not to be too fanboyish : Going Places (1974) This Sweet Sickness The Last Metro Menage The Return of Martin Guerre
Police Under the Sun of Satan
Uranus Buffet Froid Loulou Choice of Arms The Woman Next Door Danton
Jean De Florette
Camille Claudel Too Beautiful For You Cyrano De Bergerac
Colonel Chabert (1994)

mainly Danton but the rest of his stuff mostly blends together. He's usually less interesting than his costars.

Danton, Cyrano, Loulou, Jean de Florette, and while you discounted silly commercial stuff, he's incredible in The Closet. A lot of people like 36th Precinct, which is basically a crapper, Frencher Heat, so that might be worth watching if you're into that kind of thing.

My 2nd fav actor. That '74 to '95 ish stretch Pac mentions is mind boggling and unrivaled - there are more great perfs than years. Here's a jumble of my favs that I've seen :
[my top three; Jean de is an all-time masterpiece movie that must be seen with its second half Manon of the Spring] Danton Return of Martin Guerre Jean de Florette
[next up greats, signature perfs, formative perfs, with some of his most underrated] Loulou Le Tartuffe This Sweet Sickness Under the Sun of Satan Cyrano de Bergerac Too Beautiful for You The Woman Next Door Get Out Your Handkerchiefs Going Places Green Card Colonel Chabert
[and more!] Le Garcu A Pure Formality La Machine 36th Precinct Buffet Froid Police 1900
[great supporting perfs and some comedic standouts] Uranus (all-time level supp) The Bridge Nathalie... The Closet Bon Voyage All the Mornings in the World Ruby & Quentin Les Comperes Les Fugitifs Menage
[couple recent perfs I like] Valley of Love Welcome to New York Let the Sunshine In The Singer
......that's it for now, and I was holding back! Lot others, acclaimed and very daring stuff, that I've left off for now.

I was never too big on him (although I have seen very little) until watching Jean de Florette earlier this year, which instantly entered my favorites list. That is one hell of a performance in one hell of a film.

He is a great commedian, just his controversial persona is much more interesting than the roles he played.-

Depardieu is exceptional in Buffet Froid (1979) - on TUBI currently btw - and it's very possible you don't notice it at first with Bernard Blier (hilarious, scene stealing) and all the surreal flourishes - but he's fantastic here and I can't think of another movie like it until Man Bites Dog (1992) much later.........he dominates a great surrealistic comedic piece - ie he shares with the ensemble but he pushes the movie forward - and is in almost every scene and rooted it in a kind of sad reality, contemporary, timely and relevant to when it was made within its subtext.......... He has to carry the movie .......and he's simultaneously the most "believable" and "threatening" - he grounds the film which is really hard with this odd a film........ We talk a lot about the "great actors who can't - or didn't - do comedy much" so they are harder to really rate - DDL (more arguable), Hopkins, Washington, Ullman, Clift, Duvall etc. - but Depardieu is closer to O"Toole - especially in Depardieu's great mid-70s-early 90s run........he's spectacular at the heaviest drama and exuberantly joyous and odd in his best - and weirdest - comic roles like O'Toole at his loosest.......

www.euronews.com/culture/2023/12/26/dont-erase-gerard-depardieu-artists-denounce-the-lynching-of-actor-accused-of-rape"Gérard Depardieu is probably the greatest of all actors. (see below)"Well he was 5th or 6th on my list but I get the point - certainly only DePac and Nicholson are his only living American rivals - in his great period (now passed) ........that includes imo the next tier down Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman etc On the eve of his 75th Birthday - which is on December 27th - More than fifty actors, directors, singers and writers have signed an article in French newspaper Le Figaro defending Depardieu, who was recently shown in the aforementioned documentary making a series of misogynistic and insulting remarks about women, including sexual remarks about an underage girl.
The signatories call for the presumption of innocence to be respected, and for the actor not to be boycotted. They say that "to deprive oneself of this immense actor would be a tragedy, a defeat. The death of art. Our own.”
The celebrities include director Bertrand Blier, actors Charlotte Rampling, Nathalie Baye, Carole Bouquet, Jacques Weber, Pierre Richard and Gérard Darmon, as well as singers Carla Bruni and Jacques Dutronc.
Le Figaro reads: "When Gérard Depardieu is attacked in this way, it is art that is being attacked. Gérard Depardieu is probably the greatest of all actors. The last sacred monster of cinema. We can no longer remain silent in the face of the lynching that is being heaped on him, in the face of the torrent of hatred that is being poured out on his person, without nuance, in the most complete amalgam and with contempt for a presumption of innocence that he would have enjoyed, like everyone else, if he were not the giant of the cinema that he is.".************* I'm going to give Valley of Love another watch for his Birthday - a more recent film - outside his peak but with his female equivalent and frequent co-star, Isabelle Huppert
