I'm not sure why I didn't think of it sooner but Plemons is an excellent fit for the role.
I didn't realize he's only 32. He seems like he's been around forever. While many of these are small roles, check out his filmography and the people he's worked with so far... I'm glad he's finally getting bigger roles.

I was beginning to think they were phasing out Tom White from the story with all the radio silence, and coupled with the radical perspective change from the original text that they're taking, it wouldn't have been that much of a leap. Either way, this is a massive coup for Plemons. I think this is basically a confirmation that Tom White is now the 4th largest role after Ernest Burkhart, William Hale, and Mollie Burkhart.

When you remember the movie is gonna get released by Apple and odds are low you will see it at the theatre:

Pretty underwhelming that this goof is gonna play the legendarily badass Texas Ranger, but I'll hope for the best I guess.

Might be like deja vu to see Plemons talking with J Edgar so soon after Judas, unless they cut the Hoover stuff. Plemons is a very good actor but seems like he'd be a better fit as one of Leo's younger brothers.

This is a big one for Plemons. I remember him fifteen years ago on Friday Night Lights and he never struck me as the guy who could land major roles in Hollywood, if anything I thought that would be Taylor Kitsch. I still find it strange honestly, to me he's a good ensemble actor but curious to see if he really is what Marty thinks he is.

Paramount is still a partner. Even so, I think Apple still plans to release their films in theaters, unlike Netflix. On the Rocks got a theatrical release in 2020.

THR is saying that he has basically the leading role, holy shit. Have they read the script? Tom White is the lead in the book but they are clearly changing the perspective for the film. DiCaprio's character is barely in the book so we don't know what the film version will look like yet. Nobody is dropping 200M if DiCaprio isn't the lead.

There is no way in hell that Tom White is the lead over Ernest at this point. The whole reason Paramount dropped out of financing it was because of the heavy script revisions that made it less of a traditional 'FBI catches the bad guy' story. Plemons could be more of a lead than De Niro and Gladstone... but definitely not DiCaprio. Still really curious to see how Scorsese is gonna pull this off. Because as a more traditional FBI story, this thing would've ripped (if it were someone like Christian Bale going against DiCaprio and De Niro)... but now it's gonna be some real heavy shit. Ernest will be an even more fucked up protagonist than Frank Sheeran, and the final 30ish minutes of this might be even more depressing.

Um, I think you guys who are saying this is a coup for Plemons maybe the same guys who end up saying "I'm surprised how marginalized he was in this!" when we see this film. Just sayin'..... I like Plemons but this stuff about him being a major young actor on MAR isn't earned yet imo....maybe this gets him closer but I'm not so sure this will be THE step up role when we see it. Hope so.......I'm a fan......

I thought White was too traditional compared to some of DiCaprio's recent roles. The change makes sense if he wanted to take on a different side but I have no idea what to expect.

Damn, that's quite the coup for Plemons. Didn't mhynson27 call this casting on another thread? Well done. Perhaps But to be fair, a lot of people had the same idea.

Wait a second -- people are really out here acting like Jesse Plemons isn't one of the top actors of his age group, and that he isn't going to fucking crush this sort of role? Okay.

Plemons reminds me of Adam Driver in that he's a character actor that all the big directors seem to want and whose roles keep getting bigger! Can't blame him for ditching Peele for Scorsese. Who wouldn't have?

Wait a second -- people are really out here acting like Jesse Plemons isn't one of the top actors of his age group, and that he isn't going to fucking crush this sort of role? Okay. Erroneous! Erroneous! Wait another second ......................because I don't think that's what anyone said or meant but just to be clear from the pacinoyes POV: Who are " the top actors of his age group" exactly anyway - because I'd say atm : Robert Pattinson, Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, Michael B. Jordan, John David Washington, Jamie Bell, Paul Dano, Leslie Odom Jr., Riz Ahmed are either in or close to his age group - Odom is the furthest away - 7 years older - and that's just off the top of my head. So he's what - top 3? Top 5? Top 10? I'm not saying all those guys are better than him - and he's never been bad/is always good - and I'm a fan of his too.......... but most of those guys have a single performance that tops him at this moment imo......and I'm willing to say "he'll fucking crush this sort of role" more precisely when I know how this role differs from the book. Or is that too calm and rational which is not usually my thing......... .........just saying there's a lot of question marks on this and where he ranks right now for people in their late 20s/ 30s. But yeah hope so, I'm pulling for him......

So...it's Meth Damon. He's a reliable and believable character actor, but I've never been blown away by his work in movies. The time to be blown is coming... You go, Plemmons!

I haven't read the book so don't know how well Plemons suits the role. However, he's brilliant at combining nice guy, gentle qualities with a dark, threatening edge. An FBI agent in a Scorsese film is likely to be a mix of light and dark, which Plemons is perfect for. Also, he's likely to be presented as the antagonist in the story, which, again, would suit Plemons. His performance in the "USS Callister" episode in Black Mirror is excellent for those who haven't seen it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Callister

I think his Game Night performance is better than what he did on Black Mirror, but yeah, he definitely knows how to play that slightly sinister dark side.
