Wait a second -- people are really out here acting like Jesse Plemons isn't one of the top actors of his age group, and that he isn't going to fucking crush this sort of role? Okay. Like I said, none of his movie work stands out to me as remarkable in any way, and I've seen him in more than a few movies now. To me, he's just a reliable character actor that usually gets hired to play dumb or sinister, or a combination of both. He does it well enough, but it's casting central stuff at this point, and I never expect anything special from him. He's like a less good version of Joel Edgerton to me.

I think his Game Night performance is better than what he did on Black Mirror, but yeah, he definitely knows how to play that slightly sinister dark side. He's my Supporting Actor winner for Game Night. "3-for-1? How can that be profitable for Frito-Lay?"

I am so happy and excited for Plemons. Dicaprio is great but man he already achieved everything he wanted. Plemons deserves great roles too!

I'll be honest, i don't know if the trades have screwed up and misreported about Plemons's character being the actual lead. But the thing is DiCaprio has decided to play Burkhart because it's regardless the juicier and most complex (and even scene stealing) character of the story. So he's way more ambitious than just playing the heroic lead, he's the morally questionable/despicable co-lead.

There is no question that DiCaprio is playing the primary lead role, which is now Ernest Burkhart. Scorsese has already confirmed this many months ago, the trades are just being lazy as Billy_Costigan has pointed out.
Scorsese in October, 2019: "And Leo [DiCaprio], I think playing Ernest at this point, the husband. And we haven’t yet settled on Tom White, but yeah, it’s shifting the story from – since we know what happens and we know certain characters. Then how do you tell the story from the inside rather than from the exterior in."
Scorsese in February, 2020: "Leonardo DiCaprio will play the main role, Bob (De Niro) will return to play William Hale, "King of the Osage hills", the man responsible for most of the murders. The rest will be Native American actors."
Ernest Burkhart is now the primary lead of the story. The only question is if William Hale or Mollie Burkhart is the 2nd biggest role.

I like Plemons in Black Mirror, and Game Night, but how has no one mentioned his performance in El Camino? If we're talking about his ability to combine nice guy, gentle qualities with a dark, threatening edge, that's the performance I'd point to first.

BUMP
I'm definitely late to the party on this thread as I haven't been really keeping up with this film. Plemons is living the good life (starring in Scorsese films and motorboating Kirsten Dunst every night...must be nice)

"All attendees signed a non-disclosure agreement and are not allowed to speak about the meeting or the film.
“Mr. Scorsese made a presentation of the overall intention of the film, particularly highlighting the themes of trust and betrayal, how ultimately the story of Mollie Kyle and Ernest Burkhart is a microcosm of the wider betrayal of the Osage people,” according to the release."
I didn't believe I could be more interested in this film but these two paragraphs proved me wrong!!!!

IMDB lists Jack Fisk (Carrie, Days of Heaven, There Will Be Blood, The Master, The Revenant) as the Production Designer and looks like that's the case, not Dante Ferretti who had worked with Scorsese nine times before and did a lot of prep for this but I think with the pandemic he's stayed in Rome and turned duties over to Sissy Spacek's Mr.

DiCaprio and De Niro star with Lily Gladstone and Jesse Plemons.

Scott Shepherd (picture right) has a good little part as DiCaprio's brother, one of the Burkharts. Random but I saw him a few years ago in a small upstate New York production of a John Cleese written farce... and doing his best Basil Fawlty, Shepherd was actually really funny.
