One of my favorite tech categories next to cinematography and costumes and it's always fun to see how it plays out, and hooo boy what a crowded year this is for production designers and set decorators!
my thinking is this:
1. Dune
2. Nightmare Alley
3. The French Dispatch
and this is where I can't decide between West Side Story, Cruella and Cyrano. They all have pros. West Side Story (Adam Stockhausen) looks gorgeous from the trailer with deliberate callbacks to the original musical in the nostalgic set design. Seems like it'd be a shoo-in in most of the recent cycles. Then you have Cruella (Fiona Crombie) which received a ton of praise for its look and aesthetic evocative of 1970s London. I can't predict against it because Disney usually has success getting tech nods for their live action projects and this has some of the best-looking sets of them all, and it'll already be on the radar for costumes. And theeennn you have Cyrano which on its face seems like the weakest, but the production design is by 6-time Oscar nominee Sarah Greenwood, four of those nods coming from her work on Joe Wright projects. Joe Wright pretty consistently gets this woman nominated, and for a film this grand in such a unique and pretty setting, I'm having a hard time predicting against it. It would be statistically unlikely for her to miss here.
and the of of course you have Belfast which could bring in a lot of coattail tech nods if people like it enough, and The Tragedy of Macbeth (but those sets might be too minimalist, we'll see), and Being the Ricardos, and The Power of the Dog, etc. Lots of players but those 6 above feel like the strongest to me at this point.
so if I had to pick a five it'd be
1. Dune
2. Nightmare Alley
3. The French Dispatch
4. West Side Story
5. ummmm for now I'll go with Cruella
