I didn't list some often mentioned picks here but since you guys are so easy to piss off: Beach Boys Pet Sounds - let's talk about the elephant in the room! Have you never heard this is overrated? Do a Google search for the love of God.... Not only is Pet Sounds not the best album of all time........it's not the best album of 1966 either - it's at best 4th - and that's being really nice: It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind Blonde on Blonde and Revolver but also behind Aftermath .......I can make strong cases for East-West, The Monks and The Sonics in the same year as being albums I play more and have played more all my life.......and that doesn't include Freak Out! or Ascension ffs!...... It's a half great record but of its 13 songs - half of those are lame vocal pop, 2 are also dull time filler instrumentals, 1 is good but is only reworking of a trad song, so let's calm down ..... 8 of the songs were co-written by a guy who was not even in the band.........so, GTFO........ I never said it sucked....it doesn't .......... ........but at the same time........I remain your humble servant:

Beach Boys Pet Sounds Have you never heard this is overrated? Do a Google search for the love of God.... I mean you can find people on the internet calling every acclaimed album overrated... How is the vocal pop lame?? Not sure why the fact it's a reworking a trad song matters... reworkings can be great too.

Not sure why the fact it's a reworking a trad song matters... reworkings can be great too. * I'm just saying that mouths should not be agape and pearls should not be clutched at anyone calling Pet Sounds overrated - but yes the Internet is a mess of such things - can't wait for that fad to die out Pet Sounds doesn't really fit my definition of this topic - laid out in the OP - I know why people love it - I love half of it too, and it has a great story apart from the music. I was just engaging in a little idolatry takedown ........ * ...........the reworked song is excellent here - I just meant the album isn't all originals or written from entirely within the band either - ithe way the 3 clearly (imo) better records of 1966 were (Dylan, Beatles, Stones); which were all originals - no instrumentals, no outside the band co-writers or trad reworkings. Even the great 60s Pop albums that followed Pet Sounds were unlike it........ Village Green Preservation Society, Forever Changes, Odessey and Oracle........all originals there too.......is Pet Sounds better than those 3? Maybe.......I'm also not so sure about that though or at least 1 of them ...... .............but I also have more love for its best parts than any contempt for it .....it's among the best of its year at its best ........ I just know it's not in the top 3 of 1966 for me as a whole record............. is it 6th? 8th? 4th? .......arguable, imo..........but that's a different thread I reckon..........

Wilson's real masterpiece is Smile Sessions which is one of the greatest albums of all time and makes me more comfortable with people calling him a genius. Pet Sounds is more important than it is good. There's around 4 great songs but a lot of the deeper album cuts are pretty dated and corny. I would definitely but late 60's Kinks and Odyssey and Oracle several rungs ahead of it. But it's still massively influential and changed album production forever so there's that.

I've previously listed 12 records in this thread so far - and some of them are from artists I love other work by - REM, Big Star, Nirvana ...........but Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City (2013) - the most recent - isn't one of those: I kinda hate everything they ever did......I hated their look.......sound.......smugness.......their videos.......but this record really provokes me for some reason - perhaps the most annoying album........ from an annoying band .......in an annoying genre - "Indie Rock" - in most of its later incarnations of the 2000s.....with annoying song titles too ("Diane Young" - get it? - Dyin' Young......ugh) There's 1 song on this record - Ya Hey - that I enjoy and even that is too cute for its own good......and that song title thing again.......
