RIP
What a life and what a badasssss. What didn't the man do? He was an Army vet, a painter in Mexico, a novelist and Mad magazine translator in France running around with Chester Himes, a playwright, a musician, an actor (shoutout Altman's OC and Stiggs) and, of course, a filmmaker....one who called out the nouvelle vague while using its tricks to his stylized advantage, influencing whole movements (blaxploi) and hugely popular guys like Spike Lee (that floating dolly shot is Peebles). He wasn't shy on camera either, um. Tho I haven't seen his later movies, Watermelon Man and Baadass are interesting in viewing them as this gutsy artist working in and out of the studio - (barely) obeying and then blowing it up. But his landmark sort-of masterwork is Story of a Three Day Pass (1968) which is a must see-- it's a confrontational and deeply informed yet greatly playful movie. I did a longer write up in the Last Movie thread. It had 250 IMDb votes back in May when its restoration was being screened, and only 320 now. Ridiculously low!
Peebles walked the walk and didn't apologize... I love how he trialed around so many arts. Like the Three Day Pass line, "Today you'll see how a man can free himself."
