I am almost done watching all of the best picture nominees. The ones left are Nomadland and Sound of Metal. So far, all of them I have watched are pretty strong, except for Mank. Great looking movie. Amanda Seyfried is really great, but that's about it. Minari was a beautiful film. The film deserved all of its Oscar nominations, and the Grandma stole the show. Youn Yuh-jung displayed a masterclass in acting. However, I am confused on why this was considered as a "foreign language film".
I know what some of you will be saying, "but the Yi family speaks Korean". Yes, I know, but the credits are in English. The characters speak both English and Korean, and the film takes place in rural, dirt poor Arkansas. To me, this is like saying Godfather Part 2, The Two Popes, and Slumdog Millionaire are foreign language films.

Only the Golden Globes and their weird ass rules had it as a foreign film. The Oscars didn't class it as one, and neither do I.

The Austin Film Critics, NY Online critics, Seattle Film Critics, and the Vancouver Film Critics did as well.

It felt like one of the most American films of last award season. It being classified as a foreign film feels kind of offensive.

People only classify it as "foreign" because half the time the Yi family speaks in Korean. It's truly an American story about an American family surviving the 80s.
