I think the biggest difference between Djokovic and Messi is that Messi was the undisputed best of his era already something like 15 years ago. One can certainly argue the World Cup is what sealed his GOAT status, but I'd say it was already obvious 10 years ago that he was the best that ever played the game. I saw Pelè playing, sir.

Good for you. Sports evolve, though. I'm sure you can make an argument for Pele being the greatest footballer ever, you can't make an argument for him being the best footballer ever.

I am not much of a soccer fan but I think Ronaldo was argued with Messi 15 years before the World Cup but I'm an outsider....maybe he's just a scorer I dunno
When you add team athletes into the alive rather than active argument......Djokovic loses because Gretzky, Jordan, Brady are "alive"
But individual active athlete? A far better case with that terminology imo

A far better case with that terminology imo It was an odd situation with Messi and Ronaldo. Messi was often argued against Pele and Maradona as the greatest even before, whereas Ronaldo never was. Then there was the Messi and Ronaldo debate.
The Ronaldo over Messi argument was mainly fueled by Ronaldo fans making up arguments that only ever would apply to Ronaldo in order to make him look better. When Messi finally entered his prime it has always been a difference in class between these two footballers, which is evidenced by the fact that Ronaldo entire claim is his goal scoring record and Messi has been the better goal scorer throughout their careers. In every other facet of the game (that is not directly related to themselves scoring goals) Messi is well ahead of Ronaldo. In terms of how good they are as footballers, it's really not particularly close. Ronaldo is closer to someone like Lewandowski than he is to Messi.
Yeah, active individual athlete is much more of an argument. That rules out Phelps and Bolt for two. Can't really come up with any good candidates actually. I could argue Ma Long for table tennis, but I think I'd rate tennis in general higher.

Not sure if anyone follows cycling but how about Tadej Pogačar - routinely mentioned among the sports all-time greats - Merckxx and Hinault? At his peak now too......
