Looks like Cry Macho is getting bad reviews. Yeah, I must admit I’ve been on the Cry Macho bandwagon for a while now, but even before the reviews s were coming in I was thinking about jumping off. To be honest, I am still hoping it’s a decent enough movie. I don’t know if I’ll catch it in a movie theater when it comes out, but I still want to see it sometime down the road even if it’s not an Oscar contender. So hopefully even if it’s not a Best Picture favorite, or any serious contender at any level, hopefully it will have some redeeming qualities to it.

The Power of The Dog, Belfast, or Don't Look Up.
I don't see the new PTA or Del Toro movies coming close to the BP win.

Since it's being talked about, saw the Belfast trailer and damn, don't think I've ever seen a trailer that screamed "BP winner" more than that, whether you take that as a good or bad thing. They're probably dying to award Branagh too.

I should post this in The Tender Bar but there isn't a Tender Bar thread - um - and I'm old and tired Clooney’s follow-up to Netflix sci-fi pic The Midnight Sky is an adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner J.R. Moehringer’s bestselling memoir of the same name, penned by Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed, The Gambler).
The coming-of-age drama will hit L.A. and NY theaters in limited release on December 17, opening nationwide on December 22. The film will be available globally for streaming via Amazon Prime Video on January 7.

Not going to vote just yet, but Licorice Pizza, Belfast and King Richard definitely need to be added to the next poll. Belfast is going to be my Best Picture prediction for the rest of 2021.

Yeah Belfast is pretty clearly the front-runner at the moment.

It does seem like Belfast has muscle, but I'm curious where else it can win to secure it. It doesn't seem like a screenplay frontrunner yet, the acting categories are still up in the air in terms of contenders, and its cinematography/techs don't seem that flashy compared to other films this year.

Yeah, next month I'll vote for it too. The fact it won the TIFF audience votes shows it has potential to be more than a critics darling. And Branagh has been around long enough to gather a lot of good will.

Except for 2011, TIFF has been pretty darn accurate:
2020 - Nomandland - Picture, Director, Actress winner 2019 - Jojo Rabbit - Adapted Screenplay winner 2018 - Green Book - Picture, Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor winner 2017 - Billboards - Actress and Supporting Actor winner
2016 - La La Land - Director, Actress winner 2015 - Room - Actress 2014 - Imitation Game - Adapted Screenplay 2013 - 12 Years a Slave - Picture, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay
2012 - Playbook - Actress
All of them won at least one major Guild award.

I don’t think that honestly matters anymore since Best Picture has a completely different voting system than everything else. Recent years have shown that gap widening. Though I think screenplay is very much in play.

Not wise to write off director/screenwriter combos. They love awarding screenplay as the consolation prize. Kenneth is a well-respected actor/director.

Branagh has 5 noms in five different categories, if he gets BP, BD and Screenplay, he goes to 8 in 7. It's quite possible he wins something, at worst screenplay.

If they do the smart thing and push both Dornan and Balfe Supporting, they could have 1-2 acting winners on their hands.

I'm still surprised by the low rating (6.6 for 1779 votes) of The Power of the dog on IMDB and the bad/mediocre reviews that go with it too. I know the number of votes is still not big and it's just IMDB but in recent years I don't think there have been many BP nominees movies with a rating under 7 there (Mank is one of them with 6.9), it could be one of these movies that the critics love but that the general audience will find hard to even like, well, it's Campion after all. But even something great but slow and somewhat innacessible (for some) like Roma has a rating of 7.7. I can't wait to see it tho., I know it has leaked and maybe some of you have already saw it...
BTW I've been on AwardWorthy these days to check how the different oscar's races are going...this place is really...something. It's like they have 20 Franklin there, "stanning" few and being negative about praticaly everything else and trying extremely hard too, like finding the 3% negatives reviews of a movie and bringing it over, and over and over again. And some of them have like 10K/20K...messages, unbelievable. I Will Never Understand These People.

Mank had a rotten audience rating with that IMDB score so it will be interesting to see what happens with this one. You're right though, this probably is one of those critics love it audiences hate it type of situations. I read over a few of the reviews and people think the movie is boring.

The Power of the Dog actually has EXACTLY typical IMDB reaction tbh - it is not rated low because it is boring I'm assuming (?) so much as, it is rated low because it makes a cultural statement - it's a Pro-Gay film I assume - it's a Pro-Gay book among other things ........
I haven't seen it but just going by the book.......it's a voter bias to some degree - hard to say how much........eventually that will b-o-u-n-c-e back but it may stay low because people don 't know that it IS that before they watch (unlike Brokeback Mountain)

This doesn't really fly considering the film came first in the Telluride People's Poll, and Top 3 at TIFF.

On that point if he gets nominated for Original Screenplay and Best Picture, but misses out on director, he can keep his extremely unique streak going by having seven nominations in seven different categories.
