I liked it an awful lot, but I feel like we as a society collectively forgot about Life of Pi. That's on TV all the TIME in this country. Someone must be watching it. It's on TV quite often here too.

These are not the most obscure guys, they're maybe movies that were a big deal at the time and have cooled off considerably, but those aren't the top choices. A Beautiful Mind, The Hours, Seabiscuit, and Finding Neverland for a few examples are studio movies with big movie stars, they are not "obscure" by any measure.
Looked at all the 21st century BP nominees and I would say Beasts of the Southern Wild. Haven't seen it so I can't comment on the quality but I had completely forgot it existed and I don't think in all my time in online movie discussion forums since then I've seen anyone mention it even once since the year it came out.

It doesn't help that the director waited 8 years to follow up this movie and hasn't really done anything else.

Let me be another one to say that Life of Pi is a pretty frequent guest on Russian TV.
Some of the mentions here seem crazy to me... These things are hard to judge because we all fly in different circles - someone might never see stuff like Seabiscuit or The Hours mentioned in their places of interest while others may feel completely the opposite way. But while they may not have become cultural milestones (that's a big feat), I wouldn't call them obscure.
I find it hard to believe that those movies are worse/less often remembered than stuff like Lion or Philomena.
And since the OP mentioned acting categories, there's quite a bit of stuff to choose from - The Cooler, Pieces of April, The Last Station.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Best Picture and an acting nomination for a legend in the field. I could barely remember a thing about it when I flicked through the Best Picture nominees on wiki to pull an answer out for the thread. I had to go to my lineups to get my rating and remind myself if I liked it I gave it a 7 so apparently I did.

Most obscure major Oscar nominated and movie that has fallen off the radar culturally are 2 different things to me. I find the former to be a fun idea for a thread. Like A Better Life got a Best Actor nom for Demián Bichir but the movie is still relatively obscure, same for Pieces of April (Best Supporting Actress nom for Patricia Clarkson). Good point. I was thinking more along the lines of a movie that has fallen off the radar culturally.

We had a Dalton Trumbo movie and Bryan Cranston was nominated for it. And I had to remind myself of that just now.
Three Billboards seems to already have vanished.
Oh and of course, Philo-Mania

For Best Picture, An Education feels like the one that has fallen the most off the map to me. Lone Scherfig might be the most obscure director of a 21st century BP nominee too. Even just in the context of Carey Mulligan, I feel like I never heard anybody talk about it while Promising Young Woman was coming out.
Beasts of the Southern Wild at least has a cool poster and I've seen the score still come up, and just generally being Quvenzhane Wallis' little moment in the sun. I agree that I'm puzzled by a lot of the things people are mentioning....I think Seabiscuit is one of those things where people are aware of that movie's existence even if they've never seen it. Horse movies are fucking weird like that. Hidalgo, Secretariat. They possibly would even remember Tobey Maguire was in it and they'd know like, yeah, it's some horse, Great Depression, he's little, beats the odds. You could still make Seabiscuit jokes and it'd be just obscure enough to be funny but well-known enough that people would think "Oh yeah, that movie."
With other categories, A Better Life was definitely one I thought of first. I think the screenplay categories are the major categories that get the most obscure. Margin Call always felt pretty obscure.
And I mean, this may speak more to how out of touch I am and falling behind, I don't know, but I have to say that just looking recently, I feel like the half-life on streaming stuff is way shorter. Mudbound, The Two Popes, The White Tiger. I'm not seeing those conversations happening. Only reason I really remember anybody talking about Mudbound was Mary J Blige and Rachel Morrison.

Oh and of course, Philo-Mania Good choices!! Trumbo has really flown under the radar since it's release, so that's a good one. And for a movie that got a Best Picture nomination and a handful of others nods, Philomena seems to have faded away just a few months after it's release, so yeah that's a good one too!!

That's interesting about streaming services. It will be interesting what major streaming movies that got Oscar nominations will be remembered in time. I get that there will be some that will come out just fine fine (The Irishman for example might in good shape for at least the near future), but outside of a few major ones, it might be pretty ambiguous who might end up being name checked a decent amount in the future.

Whoa, I totally forgot about that one!!! Good choice! it was technically revoked, but that song is a certified bop and deserved the nomination imo

Yeah, I remember that whole story. Kind of interesting: the song ( and the movie itself) going from semi obscurity to getting an Oscar Nomination and then having the nomination revoked.
And it’s been awhile since I’ve heard the song but I remember it being pretty good and if it managed to keep it’s Nomination, I would have been fine with it.

I think it was because Bruce Broughton was an Academy governor and personally e-mailed members asking them to consider his song? It seemed like it was a soft sell on his part, far from the most shameless campaign offenses but I guess technically out of bounds.
